About Chris Matherly

Chris Matherly created “The Morel Mushroom Hunting Club” organization in 1999 learning how to create and build a website all on his own with no teachings or instruction using “AOL Press” in the beginning! His passion and efforts made his website the number one site on the Internet with over 5 million yearly hits as of 2017 and in 2019 many days in April had well over 10,000 views as well! He now has over 1000 members to his club.

Chris has designed and developed many helpful foraging aids such as “The Ultimate Mushroom Mesh Bag”, and produced several how-to DVD’s about mushrooms and hunting them.

Chris Matherly has hosted and guided over 350 foraging events with more than 2000 participants nationwide from coast to coast. He teaches all about wild foraging for edible and medicinal plants and mushrooms. He shares his vast knowledge of how, when, and where to find common edibles.

He also includes a huge feast with his amazing wild-food cuisine chef skills at the end of the event, using all of the foraging finds from the group that were harvested in the wild from the previous 1-2 days of hunting. It’s no surprise that he has the knack for being creative with his foraged recipes… His mother, Madonna Matherly, was a finalist in the Pillsbury Bake Off three times! Chris attended one of her events and got to meet Mr. Pillsbury!

His passion for foraging has previously landed him on the Travel Channel’s show “Cash and Treasures”, the History Channels show “Modern Marvels”, and two full seasons of National Geographic Channel’s hit show “Filthy Riches”.

Chris also did a pilot episode for Animal Planet called “The Mushroom Hunters”

He has written two cookbooks and 3 field guides and currently writing many more. Digital versions are available from Amazon. He is also in the process of writing several other books such as a third cookbook, a wild edible plant book, a morel burnsite book, and a top 25 delicious wild edible mushrooms book.

He has a popular Youtube Channel displaying many of his hosted forays including cooking and hunting as well as many species identification videos, over 250 videos total and nearly three million views.

He has even been interviewed by the New York Times, Yahoo Foods, Fox 6 Now, KCTV 5, KTTC, Columbus Dispatch, Twin Cities, Langdon Cook, Good Reads, and many other newspaper and magazine articles. One of his amazing wild mushroom recipes is even featured by Emeril!

His foraging events, (forays) are very exciting and addicting to watch. His wonderful personality shines in all of his TV appearances as he shares his knowledge and his passion for medicinal and edible mushrooms and plants as he turns these edibles into amazing gourmet dishes all over a charcoal grill in the wilderness!

When Chris was just a mere 12 years young, he entered an adult photo contest at a local college in Indiana. The results: He WON!!!

Recently, Chris was involved with a Morel, (Morchella) species DNA study with Philippe Clowez from France. Together, they co-named/renamed the common Eastern US yellow morel species from Morchella esculenta, (originally), M. esculentoides, (previously), to it’s new name “Morchella americana”.

Chris is very much “sold” on Natural Remedies as he has not had a cold or flu in over 15 years and claims that medicinal mushrooms and plants have prevented him from contracting an illness. He includes a medicinal section in his latest book and recently developed a line of tinctures and of specially blended medicinal teas for several different cures and preventions.
