Morel Mushroom Hunting Club

Newsletter September 2011

By: Chris Matherly

I started the Morel Mushroom Hunting Club in 1999. I put my heart into it. This was my hobby, and now it is much, much more than a hobby. I have slowly tried to covert to making mushrooms my sole income for a few years now, being a residential contractor for 25 years, I was and am ready to give this my entire attention. I love, and I do mean "LOVE" to guide people in the woods, see their excitement when we find the mother-load, and then come back and cook up a feast. I love hunting, teaching, and cooking. (Oh yeah, and of course, eating!) Unfortunately, most people have no idea the expense of traveling, the food, high gas prices, wear and tear on my truck, camping supplies, and even land lease costs.

Even to non-members- the following services on my website are available to you:

You do not have to be a member to use these helpful tools:

I can't wait until next Morel season!

Responses so far from people who believe in me:

Chris,
I applaud your asking for help! I am sure I am speaking for most, when I say, that I realize how hard you work. I know you are not rich. I certainly appreciate all that you do! You made last year so amazing for me, as far as the mushroom hunting went. Just joining the club, I learned more than I have ever known about mushrooms. You were always quick to respond to a question, when I asked. I know what you are going through. I lost my house, and had to file for bankruptcy, about 5 years ago. Then I lived in a 27-ft trailer, with no plumbing, for 2 years. So, believe me, I can really relate to your situation! Then God blessed me with getting my veteran's disability, I got my social security, and I now have a house with 1/4 acre, and rolling pastures around me! So, here is what I am going to do. My membership is coming due. I will look at the options, and renew after the 1st of September. Not only that, I will try to send you a small stipend every month, until you get back on your feet. It will be small.. Maybe only $100 or so, perhaps more if I can do it. I have other charities, and people I sponser. I know it is not much, but hopefully, if everyone else gets on board, and helps out, as you said, with the memberships and all, it will add up. I will put you on my prayer list. God must have big plans for you. Hang on! Keep us posted. Sounds like your ship will be coming in soon, then you can look back on all of this and laugh! Or use it! You are one of the good guys.. It will work out. Take care, now.

Many blessings to you..

Hi Chris,

I am so sorry to hear of your situation. I too am having severe financial problems. Money is very tight, and there are weeks that I can’t even buy food. My car is on it’s way out, and I have no money and cannot get a car loan due to bad credit etc. That is why I didn’t rejoin this year. But, you are in a much worse situation than me, so, tomorrow when I get paid, I will rejoin. I read somewhere that the only way to get money is to give it! So, I am giving to you.

I love the Iron Chef and will pray that you get to do it. I hope and trust that people will give.

Sincerely,

Karen

Chris:

I just returned from a 1 month hiatus (I am self employeed as well), and will need to hit a milestone so I can invoice my client for some cash. I expect I will have some limited funds sometime early next week (hope so, the cell bill will be due).

I will see if at that point, I can donate $100 or so. I'll keep you posted, cause I know what cash flow issues are like!

Jeff

I joined at the $150 level; 99 to go.

Best of luck. I hope to join you on a morel foray in Washington this next Spring.

Kayaks

Chris, I can send you $50 on this Friday. I will use the donate button on the website. God Bless! I had a great time on the foray in Ohio this year, I hope you make it back again.

Molly

And within 2 hours, thanks to the following that have immediately donated and joined:

Connie Mullen
Adam Hungate
don pastor
Judy Holzmann
Calvin Gross
Michael Kaiser
Bill Stearn
HDean Johnson
Katherine L Briggs
Patricia Brandt
Gerald Petschen

I hear all of that, Chris. I'm there too. I officially joined, sorry only Economy, but it will help. I believe in you and what you do and want only the best for you and yours for now and in the future. If we don't stick together in these hard times, we're worthless.

I do hope that all the folks you've enlightened about Shroomage and given them joy during your forays respond to you too.

Best of Luck,

Laura

Hello Chris....

Thank you for going to your membership asking for assistance. It takes a good man with love in his heart to tell the members the truth. We all have difficult periods in our lives when we are doing good for others and find the need to be humble and admit why. You will become a better leader because of the need.

What is your address so I can put a $50 donation check in the mail immediately.?

I hope and pray another 300 or more give you the same amount or more to bring you through this crisis.

Don't give up! Never give up what your heart loves doing and sharing.

Good luck my friend. God bless and give you peace.

Sincerely,

Oscar L.

Chris sorry to hear about your troubles man i can relate been there i joined the dvd club plus donated 25$ wish i could do more. When you get your show come on down to st. Hey Chris I am sorry to hear things are so tough for you lately. Things are not easy here but not as desperate as your situation. I am going to talk to my wife and see what date I an do one of your forays in the area (I'm in NC) so I can sign up and pay. things will get better, and I will post links to your site on my facebook page. anything to help. Best of luck, Cary

Craig and I will help somehow, just not sure on how yet. We ARE thinking of you. Chris, you are gifted. You are where you are supposed to be. It will change. It will be grand. You are the Master Mushroomer!! We just met you this last May but look forward to more meetings! We get you, we have that same mushroom bug. The hunt is amazing.YOU ARE AMAZING!!! More amazement is coming.

I'll try my best even if it's only 1 yr membership! Housing market here in Florida still sucks! Hubby's unemployed, I can't find a job! might b moving back again to Iowa in the spring, in time for mushroomin!:D But tomorrow or Friday you'll hear from me! 20 bucks surely won't brake us anymore than we spiritually are. Raquel

Chris, I enjoy your website and the information that is available. As a previous non-member I had always considered joining but never had budgeted the cost of membership into my finances. After reading your letter, I realize that in order to continue enjoying this website and the help with mushroom identification you provide I need to take the step to enroll and become a member. I have always wanted a copy of your book so I am joining at the "book level". I hope this helps in your time of need. Butch

I joined the club and hope things turn around for you Chris. I will be at a foray some day soon and love learning to identify all the mushrooms.. Thanks for all you do."
