March 24th, 2008: "Morels Blues"
Morel season is here and just getting started,
My woods are dry and I'm brokenhearted,
Mushrooms are here and for that I am thankful,
But I yearn for morels and theirs not one morsel.
Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas too,
They're finding some beauties and I'm happy for you.
But here in Mississippi we havent a clue,
Why morels just dont prosper, oh what shall we do?
I'm sure there is a reason for this calamity,
MS. with no morels deserves everyones pity!
We've tried and tried and cant make them grow,
But then its not up to us, and as to why; God knows.
So I leave it to Him, after all, He's the Master,
If He sends them  in April, or maybe even faster.
Gods blessings are abundant; morels or no
We will still love and serve Him wherever we go.
                             Susan Campbell

I’ll let you decide what kind it is.  We found morels growing wild in our woods 24 years ago but haven’t found them there since. We think this one may be the result of an experiment my wife tried several years ago. She bought some fresh morels at the market and spread pieces of them in the general area where I found this one today. Because this is such a rare find for us, we won’t pick it. If we get some rain we will take a walk in the woods and see if we can find some more.Charlie Lavender Coosa County, Alabama

Mushrooms generally found near large tree trunks or under fallen, rotted branchs where leaves and soil have not been disturbed, ie. mowed with a bush hog. Have been finding them here for 18 years but did not know till now not to pull them out of the ground! Thanks for the info! We have also found black morels on occasion. My husband (a horticulturist) says that you can build up a toxicity to black morels if you eat too many or too often. I have not been able to find any such info except as it applies to some "false morels" being mistaken for black's. What can you tell me?   Thanks!

YES!!! Can you imagine that?!! Morel mushroom Heaven if ever I saw it.  Commercial mushroom pickers pay the state $300 per day to be able to hunt.  There have even been cases of rival mushroom pickers "shooting it out" with guns over certain areas.  MONTANA takes mushroom hunting to a whole new level!!!!!!! Growing Conditions = The absolute BEST areas to find morels are where there was a forest fire the year before.  It's crazy, but they pop up all over the baren, fire scorched landscape...right out in the open!!!!

April 7th, 2008: Hi Chris! Just a quick update:  I found my first morels of the season on March 29..almost 2 full weeks later than last year.  The ones I found were tiny immature blacks - I left them to grow.  I went back to check on them on April 4th, and they had grown a bit, but the cooler temperatures must be slowing things down here in KY.  Strangely enough however, after some more searching, I found 30~40 immature greys - none large enough to pick yet, but they seemed to be popping up everywhere in clusters of up to 8 in a cluster.  Also, a friend called me to let me know she thought she had morels growing in a crack in her steps on April 3rd. I was skeptical, but drove over to check it out.  Sure enough!  She had 3 very nice sized morels that had popped up right on her front door steps!  I'm attaching a picture for you.  I believe these morels are Morchella vulgaris.  When I came home, I thought I had better check my yard as well, and strangely enough, I found several in the yard, and one growing in a crack between my driveway and car port.  Crazy!  I've attached that picture as well.Finding morels in these strange places makes me start to think that some of my morel dreams of finding them in potted plants, etc, might not be so far-fetched! lol Hope all is well - it looks like you are having a great season so far! Happy Hunting! Tomi

April 11th, 2008: Hi, love your site!  Our 2 year old found her first morel this morning all by herself!  I walked right by it and didn't see it, she stopped, hunkered down, pointed at it and said, "lookit!"  We are so proud of our "lil' shroomer!"  We are in South West VA.  Found about 15 (I think they are white morels?) in the last 3 days all around a large white pine tree in our yard. Thanks for the great site, VA Shroomers

April 12th, 2008: Chris- We found 40 blacks today 4/12 at our usual spot in south central PA. We also found 22 yesterday. Quite a few are growing in pairs this year.

April 12th, 2008: Hi Chris, So inspired was I by the Mother Earth article on Morel hunting that I  followed the link to your site.  Even More inspored (ha) by your site I went for a walk today in our 10 acres of woods at the back of our property.  Well I found some mushrooms and maybe one is a false Morel but I'm not sure.  I live on Vancouver Island in the Comox valley.  We have only been here two years.  We moved up from Los Angeles to start a farm.  Anyway I don't know the area very well and would love to know what I've got out there.  Also, if you have heard of Morel sitings up this way.  On a beautiful day like today I can see how this might become addicting!

But, I am a very happy camper when the few I get are frying in the pan!!!

April 12th, 2008: We found a few more today…about 22 small greys…I really didn’t want to pick some of them because they were so small, but our temps in South Central Kansas are supposed to drop below freezing tonight…I left one that was about ¼” tall! April 14th, 2008: Hey Chris, we got the weekend that I had hoped for here in middle Tn.The rain came a day later than expected but we also got more rain than expected and the end result was only something Mother Nature could arrange. The rain "mashed down" the leaf litter on the forest floor exposing beautifull blondes ripe for the picking.I had the opportunity to "hunt" new territory and boy were my eyes opened! For years I have been hunting in areas that in hind sight can only be described as marginal at best.My new spot yielded 55 blondes averaging 3.5 to 4 inches tall and 3 greys of simillar size and to beat it all the "holler" I found them in is less than 2 acres roughly in size.I made sure to leave all the little "thumb sized fellers" to ensure seed for future generations of mushrooms and mushroom hunters. As we become better mushroom hunters let us be the protectors of sort for that which we pursue. With night time temps hovering around freezing I believe our season here is on the down hill side.To everyone north of here I wish you best of luck as the Morels show up in your neck of the Woods.Untill next year,Uncle Skunk.

April 15th, 2008:Hi Chris,This evening, Randy and I were out on our second evening of walking in our woods letting me break in my new hiking boots for the Virginia Foray. Oh, and also just getting my usually sedentary, couch potato self in shape. We did idly watch for morels, just to get our pace right. We were coming out of the woods back to our driveway and Randy stopped to relieve himself and I spied what I think is a MOREL!!!! It was about 2 feet from our driveway and not really near the base of any trees although there are poplars nearby.Ohio

You have a Morel! Morchella esculenta, a very young one! If you leave it grow about 2 weeks, it may reach a height of 6-8 inches and become golden yellow!! - Chris M

April 15th, 2008: Found in Morgan County Indiana by MOCOShooners.

April 16th, 2008:Chris,I found these yesterday April 15th. Northeast Oklahoma City. I just moved to Oklahoma from Indiana so I was looking for a confirmation that these are really morels. They look a little different compared to the ones I have found in Indiana. They are more rounded at the top and not pointed. They were a little dry when I found them but I think they will be fine to eat after I soak them a while. One more thing I don’t have a picture of….When I cut these open they had a little white residue on the insides. It looks like some grains of sugar or salt on the insides (very little). Almost all of it washed off so I just wanted to know if that had something to do with being a little dry. This white residue might have been there on others I have found in the past and I might not have noticed or someone else slicing them up and me not seeing it.

April 17th, 2008: Hi Chris, I wanted to let you know that I finally did it, found & ate my first morels and got them in my home county on 4/13/08. After talking to you on Monday and reading the GA reports I knew my window was about to close here and I was ready to give it up for another season. Then I read that Joe from Coweta Co. found some in his yard. So I hunted on, all week to no avail.By weeks end after some investagating, I realized that Coweta's first documented find was 2 miles from some of our company's properties. I took my lunch break there to feed my flesh to the ticks & chiggers. After a breif drive to the local, I stopped and got out for a look. The area was a flood plain, a mix of poplar, ash, gum and oak, wet lowland with a shallow spring creek. Under a pair of willows on a island of moss surrounded by wetlands I found 2 fresh gray's (I think), tasty morels for sure. Went back on 4/13/08 to harvest my find and look for more. Brought home 16 and saw enough to know I was a few weeks late. I'm waiting on 2009 already.Brad Myers

Don't look like a true Morel that I have gathered or purchased before.Found in Washington State, very numerous and people seem to eat them, I am just not sure if it's worth the risk. Don't look like a true Morel that I have gathered or purchased before.

These are Verpa Bohemica. Many people do eat these, you can even buy them right now on Ebay. They do cause stomach upset in many people, you have to cook very well. They do not taste nearly as good as Morels either. -Chris M

April 18th, 2008:i went back to the woods yesterday which is 3 or 4 days since i first saw it this big clucker.(Chicken Of The Woods) it is much paler now but still very soft. so i cooked it up last night 2 ways.in fact i even cooked the stalk it was so tender. i have in the past cooked the stalk and it was very pithy, woody and not pleasant... but in this case all was very tender.not a lot of flavor tho... but in texture prior to cooking it looked just like chicken breast meat.first cooking was w/ sweet onions, salt and pepper in olive oil. a neat thing was the mushroom really colored up yellowish orange as it was cooking... much prettier. 2nd was pancake batter and fried in corn oil. Casper, Chattanooga

April 18th, 2008:Susan Knapp,  morel-other  general location = Arlington, Virginia Growing Conditions = I was taking out the trash and saw these strange things popping up in the middle of my gravel driveway under a maple tree. Additional Comments = 250 plus on the season with the 130 found today...All blacks. Finally getting some decent size to them, which means the blacks will be over shortly and it will be time for the horsetails & yellows.
No complaints this year other than finding my first spot ran-sacked today. The nicely matted leaves had been raked around and/or flipped over in sheets. No chance of it being turkeys. Never understood this practice. If they are not poking through the leaves than they are not worth picking and disturbing the ground cover will wreck an area.
Glad I have plenty of back-up areas not so close to the roads.

Concerning Picking Mushrooms: Please, do not pull up the Morels! Pinch them off above the ground, or use a knife and slice them off. What you are doing is exactly the same thing as breaking a branch off of an Apple Tree to pick the Apple. You damage the underground plant of the Morel by pulling them up. You keep this practice up, and in a couple of years you will not have Morels in that spot any longer! Besides, why do you want to bring home all of that dirt anyway?- Chris M

Also, you should enter this one in the biggest Morel contest! - Chris M

April 20th, 2008:hi chris, had to send you an update.  just got back from southern illinois.  left Thursday afternoon to spend some time visiting my 96 year old grandmother, and some time looking for morels. mom and i found a little over 200 (mainly black morels, but a few small grays).  my aunt & uncle found another 150.this morning, i had to go out again before we headed home.  i only found about 30 in the 2 hours i was out.  again, they were mostly the "black" morels.southern illinois is expecting warm days & nights this week, so there should be an explosion of the greys & yellows this next weekend (at least near carbondale).i'm counting on finding my first grays here near peoria this weekend.  i will be very disappointed if i come up empty handed.

April 20th, 2008: Hi Chris - I just joined the club, and am so excited.  My husband, Brad and my son Max and I live in Western WA. (specifically Bainbridge Island).  Over my life I have been lucky enough to be exposed to people who were morel hunters and I have found a very  few myself just out of dumbluck. Today, we started out on a hike, 5 min. up the trail Brad says to me, "which trees do we look under for morels?" b/f I could reply, I looked down (I keep my eyes open in the forest at all times) and right in front of me, on the trail is a medium size, beautiful speciman of a morel.  I was speechless and I couldn't grab it fast enough.  I spent the next three hours in the cold, dodging rain/slush/hail stuff foraging all over the hills with no more luck.  But I'm jazzed and thrilled to find your website.  Once I get my password, I will patiently watch the morel migration towards us. Yeee Hah! Happy Hunting! Wendi

My name is Kirt Peterson my brother Jon Plum and I found 154 morel’s today a few Yellow and a bunch of gray’s the Yellow we found along a hedge row following the creek and the gray’s we found under dead cedar trees on the west bank of a hill toward the bottom were the ground was moister. The majority were coming up through the dead pine needles found a few around dead elm trees with bark still on. I attached a pic. We are in Desoto, Kansas Johnson County. Love your site hope you post these. Thanks Kirt Peterson

It is good that you used a mesh bag, but plainly you can see you pulled the morels up by the roots. This is a no-no! Slice them off at the base with a knife. This will prevent damage to the mycilium. When you pick an apple, you don't yank off the whole branch...Thanks for preserving the survival of these wonderful mushrooms! - Chris m

We had 3.5" of rain Saturday night.  This was on top of the 4" we got a week ago.  And it's been a fairly wet spring here overall, so I'm guessing that has a lot to do with it.  The previous years have been dry, especially last summer. May 3rd, 2008:TTook off work on April 24th to go look for the yellow morel and i think it was well worth it. I stuck to hunting old home sites in the Shawnee National Forest here in SOUTHERN IL .  That has been abandoned since the state off IL purchased the land its seems to be the perfect place to find morels. Most of these old home sites have elm trees ash trees wild cherry and persimmon and sassafras trees along with rich black soil and old foundation stones and a lot of old dead wood on the forest floor along with a lot of compost from decaying wood and leaves I think there is 96 morels in this photo and I probably lost 10 or so because they fell apart in my bag  from being dry. In all since I started hunting April 14th I think I have found around 200 or so not bad for just going after work  for a few hours except for today the 24th well happy shrooming from the shroomster johnboy from Marion IL

May 3rd, 2008:Chris, Here are as couple pics from yesterday's haul, inside the city of  Indianapolis. The morels are the best I've ever seen them here.  Still young and  luscious, I am having excellent luck on the beds I established years  ago, as well as  inner-city woodlots.I have more images, plenty of doublets and triplets.  The second
photo you can see the bulk are M. esculenta, but there are a few M.  angusticeps at the bottom left of the platter.
I have had two excellent forays so far this season.  We are trying to  teach a Labrador retriever to sniff and find, but no real progress  with that yet.I'm certain Ohio is faring well for you.  They've had more rain than  we have here, but the same temps, should be excellent for you there  if it is exccellent here, and it is, mmmmmmm.Jim the Treeguy
