March 24th, 2008: "Morels Blues"
Morel season is here and just getting started,
My woods are dry and I'm brokenhearted,
Mushrooms are here and for that I am thankful,
But I yearn for morels and theirs not one morsel.
Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas too,
They're finding some beauties and I'm happy for you.
But here in Mississippi we havent a clue,
Why morels just dont prosper, oh what shall we do?
I'm sure there is a reason for this calamity,
MS. with no morels deserves everyones pity!
We've tried and tried and cant make them grow,
But then its not up to us, and as to why; God knows.
So I leave it to Him, after all, He's the Master,
If He sends them  in April, or maybe even faster.
Gods blessings are abundant; morels or no
We will still love and serve Him wherever we go.
                             Susan Campbell

I’ll let you decide what kind it is.  We found morels growing wild in our woods 24 years ago but haven’t found them there since. We think this one may be the result of an experiment my wife tried several years ago. She bought some fresh morels at the market and spread pieces of them in the general area where I found this one today. Because this is such a rare find for us, we won’t pick it. If we get some rain we will take a walk in the woods and see if we can find some more.Charlie Lavender Coosa County, Alabama

Mushrooms generally found near large tree trunks or under fallen, rotted branchs where leaves and soil have not been disturbed, ie. mowed with a bush hog. Have been finding them here for 18 years but did not know till now not to pull them out of the ground! Thanks for the info! We have also found black morels on occasion. My husband (a horticulturist) says that you can build up a toxicity to black morels if you eat too many or too often. I have not been able to find any such info except as it applies to some "false morels" being mistaken for black's. What can you tell me?   Thanks!

YES!!! Can you imagine that?!! Morel mushroom Heaven if ever I saw it.  Commercial mushroom pickers pay the state $300 per day to be able to hunt.  There have even been cases of rival mushroom pickers "shooting it out" with guns over certain areas.  MONTANA takes mushroom hunting to a whole new level!!!!!!! Growing Conditions = The absolute BEST areas to find morels are where there was a forest fire the year before.  It's crazy, but they pop up all over the baren, fire scorched landscape...right out in the open!!!!

April 7th, 2008: Hi Chris! Just a quick update:  I found my first morels of the season on March 29..almost 2 full weeks later than last year.  The ones I found were tiny immature blacks - I left them to grow.  I went back to check on them on April 4th, and they had grown a bit, but the cooler temperatures must be slowing things down here in KY.  Strangely enough however, after some more searching, I found 30~40 immature greys - none large enough to pick yet, but they seemed to be popping up everywhere in clusters of up to 8 in a cluster.  Also, a friend called me to let me know she thought she had morels growing in a crack in her steps on April 3rd. I was skeptical, but drove over to check it out.  Sure enough!  She had 3 very nice sized morels that had popped up right on her front door steps!  I'm attaching a picture for you.  I believe these morels are Morchella vulgaris.  When I came home, I thought I had better check my yard as well, and strangely enough, I found several in the yard, and one growing in a crack between my driveway and car port.  Crazy!  I've attached that picture as well.Finding morels in these strange places makes me start to think that some of my morel dreams of finding them in potted plants, etc, might not be so far-fetched! lol Hope all is well - it looks like you are having a great season so far! Happy Hunting! Tomi

He told me how good "wildfish" were and how she would rarely find them. The last time he had one was in 1973, so we were very excited when we found a patch under some old apple trees. Your website was so helpful. Will send you pictures soon. Somer Evans

April 11th, 2008: Hi, love your site!  Our 2 year old found her first morel this morning all by herself!  I walked right by it and didn't see it, she stopped, hunkered down, pointed at it and said, "lookit!"  We are so proud of our "lil' shroomer!"  We are in South West VA.  Found about 15 (I think they are white morels?) in the last 3 days all around a large white pine tree in our yard. Thanks for the great site, VA Shroomers

April 12th, 2008: Hi Chris, So inspired was I by the Mother Earth article on Morel hunting that I  followed the link to your site.  Even More inspored (ha) by your site I went for a walk today in our 10 acres of woods at the back of our property.  Well I found some mushrooms and maybe one is a false Morel but I'm not sure.  I live on Vancouver Island in the Comox valley.  We have only been here two years.  We moved up from Los Angeles to start a farm.  Anyway I don't know the area very well and would love to know what I've got out there.  Also, if you have heard of Morel sitings up this way.  On a beautiful day like today I can see how this might become addicting!

My find though is very small. In the very best year I will gather  only a half bushell. And it has been quite a few years since I have gathered that amount. But, I am a very happy camper when the few I get are frying in the pan!!!

April 12th, 2008: We found a few more today…about 22 small greys…I really didn’t want to pick some of them because they were so small, but our temps in South Central Kansas are supposed to drop below freezing tonight…I left one that was about ¼” tall! The morels (yellows, greys)come up when the asparagus is starting to grow vigorusly (usally 2 weeks after first sprouts).  This has been pretty consistant for the past 6 years that have been addicted to these mushroom.  HAPPY HUNTING  The owen county hill hopper

April 14th, 2008: Casper, a bit of good news from chattanooga..first this pic is of a friend at her cabin. we found these around an old scrubby apple tree. signal mountain.later that same day, down in the valley, along a channelized flowing stream i found...a small colony of Red Footed Georgia Giants!

April 14th, 2008: Hey Chris, we got the weekend that I had hoped for here in middle Tn.The rain came a day later than expected but we also got more rain than expected and the end result was only something Mother Nature could arrange. The rain "mashed down" the leaf litter on the forest floor exposing beautifull blondes ripe for the picking.I had the opportunity to "hunt" new territory and boy were my eyes opened! For years I have been hunting in areas that in hind sight can only be described as marginal at best.My new spot yielded 55 blondes averaging 3.5 to 4 inches tall and 3 greys of simillar size and to beat it all the "holler" I found them in is less than 2 acres roughly in size.I made sure to leave all the little "thumb sized fellers" to ensure seed for future generations of mushrooms and mushroom hunters. As we become better mushroom hunters let us be the protectors of sort for that which we pursue. With night time temps hovering around freezing I believe our season here is on the down hill side.To everyone north of here I wish you best of luck as the Morels show up in your neck of the Woods.Untill next year,Uncle Skunk.

They were all in bare ground (thanks to the turkeys) 2-4 feet from oak trees on the west side of the tree. The gray mushrooms were all found on southeast facing slopes. All at the top of the hill and all around oak trees. The were all found in the leaves. Most of these were large enough to be seen easily.
