14th, 2003: Tim Geho writes: Hi
Chris,
I'd like to report that Kristina Poole And Tradd Cotter
found 3 small Esculenta today 3/14/03. They were
found on a private plantation in the Charleston, SC
area. To my knowledge, this is the first documented finding of Morels in the
south east coastal plain. I've heard anecdotal reports, but nothing verified. We
have digital pictures. If you'd like me to forward the e-mail with the
attachment let me know. Have your computer problems been fixed? I hope so. I
really appreciate the work you've done to keep this site running. What is your
address so I can send this year's dues?
I hope that circumstances allow you to get out and find Morels in your area. I
know you've moved, but f we can find them in coastal SC, then perhaps you can
find them in GA. Regards, Tim Geho

Hey
everyone!
Just letting you know SCMS along with the help from Kristina Poole, a naturalist
in the Charleston, SC area, managed to track down these succulent little morsels
in a habitat filled with green ash, beech, magnolia, and yellow poplar.
Good luck finding them this year...dare I say....the hunt is ON???!?!?

Many thanks to Tim Geho for his research on tracking these in the Carolinas...
this was great for our records as we have been testing pH and soil temp/
bacteria.

Growing Conditions: All growing near the bases of tulip poplar trees. Everything here is lowlands. Tim, this sounds much the same as where I found many small yellow Morels last spring just North of Atlanta, all lowlands, and all under Poplars. I may drive up later this week to check. I also found a few black Morels there last year. -Chris M.
March 17th, 2003: Chris Matherly, webmaster, has found his first Morels of the season. I found 10 small esculenta in the exact description above that Tim did- in lowlands under large Poplar trees. The closet one was 20 feet off of a State Road. These were found 45 miles SOUTH of Macon, Georgia, which is the farthest South that I personally have experienced. I estimate that two of them have been up for a week. This was the first visit I have made to this small stretch of woods, but I could feel these 10 Morels "calling" me! - Chris M.

Additional Comments: March 23 2003 I went back and picked seventeen really good ones, approx. four to five inches. I counted roughly thirty plus morels that just didn't seem to be big enough to pick. Think I will go back in a week and check. I spoke to Roger this evening, and may meet up with him later in the week. He took several photos, (not digital) but from his description, these are the thicker-walled Morels, not the thin smaller type that I have been finding a few of here in Georgia. He described that the larger ones were bright yellow, and very firm, he left the smaller ones which were still Gray with tight pits. I informed him to go back next weekend to see how they have grown, and he will report back to us, (unless I can personally go meet up with him). -Chris M.

Please read the following two study groups, and help participate so we can all gain valuable information on the elusive Morel!
Carol Carter - I am asking for hunters to send me a tiny bit for scientific purposes. I am using DNA fingerprinting to determine the actual species of morel and the distribution across the USA. There seem to be several different species in North America. Growing Conditions: Please send me a few square mm of dried cap tissue or spores on waxed paper to: Dr. Carol Carter, ESR Dept., Portland State Univ., PO Box 751, Portland OR 97207-0751. Bigger than the ones we found last weekend. I've noticed that in this small area where we find them that different morels grow in different places. The blacks tend to grow near the road - even in the gravel. The greys and yellows grow further back off of the road. Just something that I've noticed. Anyone else notice different morels preferring different environments? I'd love to hear any other input! In the meantime - Happy Hunting!
March 27th, 2003: Jody took my advice and tried High Falls State Park north of Macon, GA, and found a new record in Morel hunting! I have previously found yellow Morels in this park, but today he found 21 Black Morels! April 1st, 2003: This is no April fools! Roger Reynolds and Chris Matherly found 158 very large yellow Morels (5-8 inches) (total of about 25 pounds!) in Jasper County, Georgia. It was one of the best spots I have ever been to with large morels about every 3 feet or closer for hundreds of feet in rich lowlands with mainly Ash, Box Elder, Sycamore, River Birch, and Poplar trees. This was no mushroom hunt, simply a harvest! Unbelievable!

Additional Comments: We searched a new spot with a fellow mushroom fanatic
and found about 50 good sized blacks in a rather small area. We looked at
some other areas where he always finds them and came up with nothing.
Maybe black season is over here? Anyway, yesterday, my husband was mowing
the grass and VIOLA! A beautiful patch of morels was growing in our yard.
Our neighbors probably thought we were nuts crawling around on our hands
and knees at dusk last night. We ended up with 21. I really
don't know what kind they are. Definitely not blacks, not half-frees
and not yellows or greys. They are thicker, grey on the outside
ridges and blackish on the inside. Very different from blacks and
it's too early for the greys yet....We found a few of these last year too
at a different spot. Any ideas, Chris? I wish I could send a
picture, but no digital camera. Tomi, send
me a photo and I will scan it and post it here!- Chris M.

found Oyster Mushrooms, - general
location: Illinois , Growing Conditions: On
dead trees
Additional Comments: I was looking at your first annual
Tennessee morel hunt. I couldn't help but notice that a plastic bag
was being used to hold the morels. Not to say I have never used a
plastic bag before because I have in the past, but onion bags or potato
bags of mesh to laundry bags with good sized mesh help spread the spores
as you walk from site to site. I have been hunting morels for 6
years now and use a mesh bag, this insures me more area to hunt in future
years. This comment is for knowledge not to blast you or your site.
I have read from many different sites that all talk of the importance of
preserving morels by allowing the spore to be spread as you walk and
locate more morels. Hope I didn't offend you just thought I would spread
some information.
Good luck on your finds this year. >:) Jeff,
thanks for noticing. I always promote the use of spore mesh bags as well.
The photo you saw was probably of when we were through hunting, we placed
them into plastic bags just to carry them home and keep the melting ice
off of them in our coolers. Once you are out of the woods, and heading
home, it is ok to place them in plastic, as the mesh (especially when you
have several pounds) will tend to damage your morels. But as for while in
the woods, everyone should be using mesh bags to SPREAD THOSE
SPORES!-Chris M.

Chris,
I found a bunch of yellow
morels today on my farm in Wilson Co. TN.
They are about 4-5 inches. I've found them a whole lot bigger. I didn't collect
them today because I didn't have a bag with me. Would you let them grow for a
few days or go on and get them? If I get them now, will more pop up later? I
found them on this one particular spot where I found my first morels. There's a
huge dead elm tree about 6-8 feet in diameter and all of the limbs have broken
off of it and are on the ground under mature cedars high on a hillside. I might
go back and get them tomorrow but wondered if it would be worth waiting til next
week. I'll also look in some other places around there where there are some more
dead elms, and some areas with ash. I really get excited when I first find them.
I know you do too. If you haven't started looking yet, start now...Horace

great numbers this time (maybe because of the rain??) We picked over 200
in one area alone. Big mature blacks - beautiful! We think
that black season is just about over here. Went to another place and
found our first half-frees of the season (25 or so), plus one tiny grey.

(Earlier in the season, they were higher up) Additional Comments: I figured that the black season was over here as many of the ones we found last weekend were very mature - however, due to this cooler weather spell, they seem to just keep coming up! My husband found 45 more yesterday. (12 were half-frees and 3 were small greys). We're going to check again this afternoon after work to see if more have popped...By-the-way Chris, the morels growing in my yard look just like the one that's second from the left, on the back row, in the picture of the opening page of your website. Are those whites/greys? Most of the whites we find are smaller...

The season really began a month ago, but it is now when it seems that they leave with force! I was yesterday with my two children: Miquel jr. (11 years) and Oriol (5 years). After to walk much, and to have broke in wheel of car, when already we thought that we would return to emptiness house, underneath an oak, next to a church of century XIV, we have found.... ONE! It is not much, but it is a joust compensates badly after a day..... One is Morchella rotunda. I send a pair to you of images. If you want, you can hang this story and the photos in the Web. Until soon! Miquel À. Pérez-De-Gregorio Joaquim Codina Mycological Association

April 13th, 2003: Hiya Chris, This is the first year that I've ever hunted for morels. My girlfriend moved down here from Ohio and said that the woods across from my home looked liked "primo" morel producing woods. It didn't take long to find out.. We found our first morels (half frees) on March 21st, and over the next couple weeks found a few dozen or so. Monday the 7th of April, we found 28, tuesday was cold and rainy, Wed. we found 173 ( pic included) rained Thur., Fri. found 160, and today found 115 all in the same 2 acres of woods! I can't wait in the mornings to grab our bags and knives and go on the hunt, and as for taste, I couldn't believe how delicious they are! I'll try and keep you informed on how the " Carolina Shrooms" are coming along. We are in Statesville, North Carolina... it's been in the mid 40's to mid 60's over the last couple of weeks.... Happy huntin!!! Kevin and Cindy Harmon
