November 7th, 2001: danielle herbst, found Other kind of mushroom: not sure,  Where did you find them- general location:  albany, oregon, Growing Conditions: under a oak tree underground, Additional Comments: i would like to know what kind of mushroom it is its close capped white with a pretty fat stem. Danielle, I would need at least a photo of your find to ID, could be anything from a Amanita to a puffball.- Chris M.

November 8th, 2001: janice say she found a morel!, How many did you find?: only a few Where did you find them- general location: I found a morel in my yard here in San Diego. I found your web site to help me identify it. I found one last year, and a knowledgeable friend identified it. When I found this one, I was pretty sure what it was, but your photos confirmed it. Scrolling through your listings I gather that these are not too common in San Diego, so I thought I would tell you of it. Our house is just a few blocks from the ocean.  Growing Conditions: I on the edge of my lawn, between the lawn and the concrete path. It rained a few days ago. As you probably know, we don't get much rain. Wierd, huh? Janice, did you happen to take any pictures? It would be great to post them here!  A Morel in November truly is a prize!-Chris M

November 8th, 2001: Invisible Shroomer, found chanterelles,  general location: I was hunting for cubensis and I found pounds and pounds of chantrelles. Near the town of Alsea, Oregon out in the Fir Tree forests. Seem to like it more around larger fir and spruce trees.

November 15th, 2001: marc nicostrate, Found  morels!, - general location: CHILE SOUTH AMERICA, Growing Conditions: UNDER OAK TREES, Additional Comments: I HAVE 100 kgs for sale. Can I come down and hunt with you?- Chris M.!

November 16th, 2001: Becka, found? other, - general location: san Antonio, Tx  Growing Conditions: cow dung, (the next day) after a storm, ground still moist as well as dung, Additional Comments: I have a mushroom book and was looking it up but I have no match the closest would be psilicybe but there are as many differences as there are matches. they were of the three shapes, convex, flat (when very mature) bell(when sprouting). they have a brown tip fading down to gray at the edge of the cap. they are velvety all over... I don't know if that is the veil or not. the gills are black and close together as well as attached to the stalk. the root is bulbous and the stalk is hollow about half a centemeter thick and white velvety membrane on that as well. Becka, send a photo, maybe we can ID for you!- Chris M.

November 30, 2001: Phil, found chanterelles,   general location: Northern California - greater Bay Area, Growing Conditions: The usual...under oaks in duff with poison oak. Additional Comments: After a slow start, things seem to be picking up. We seem to be in a regular rain pattern. Compared to last year, things are running about a month behind: if my memory serves me well, I remember picking chanterelles on Oct. 17, 2000.

December 2, 2001: We have had strange weather here in North Florida. October was colder than November, and we finally got some rain and now have puffballs and Lepiota fruiting. -Chris M.

December 3rd, 2001: (He is just now reporting what he found last spring) Huck, found morels,  general location: North Central Texas, USA.....Wise County in between Chico and Alvord on Chicken Creek, Growing Conditions: From the last two weeks of March to the first two weeks of April I found morals on the creek banks or a few feet from Chicken Creek, mostly growing in dead leaves under cedar trees and occasionally oak trees. I never did find any too far from the creek bank, which is a usually dry except for heavy rains that flood the creek in March and April of every year....however there was a drought from 1996 to 2000, I having been searching for morals since 1997, not noticing them until the heavy rains in early 2001 in which they sprang up in mass numbers. Additional Comments: This is my first time to the page, and I haven't looked around much so there might actually be recipes for morals here, but if you don't it would be cool to have recipes for morals such as soups and dishes....most of the time I just fry mine in olive oil and season them or bread them (and I'm such a poor cook I usually can't taste the mushroom cuz I put too much batter on 'em)....yeah but anyways different cooking techniques would be nice

Are these edible?

January 3rd, 2002: John Haines, found Late fall oyster mushrooms (panellus serotinus), - general location: On Bainbridge Island, WA and in Montgomery County, MD, Growing Conditions: Found the Chanterelles on Jan 3, 2002 in area of large Douglas firs. I only found four, but I wasn't really looking and was very surprised to find any. This is an area in which I found around 15 pounds in October. The late fall oysters were relatively plentiful but waterlogged and insipid in flavor. Threw most of them out. These were found in another area of the same woods with much more hard wood.  The late fall oysters have been abundant in Montgomery County, MD in moist low lands (esp along the C&O canal). I have been finding them after rains throughout the fall. Unlike those in Washington, these are a wonderfully tasting mushroom.

I haven't seen one growing since my childhood in Klamath Falls, Oregon many years ago. I wonder what we can do to keep them growing. We love to cook from our garden - and these would be a real treat! I have emailed back and forth with Mike, and he unfortuneately did not take a picture, but did go into details of his find with me, so it is official! 2002 has now begun! -Chris M.

The earliest that I have ever found them was on March 29th of the 1999 season, at Turkey Run State Park. I have noticed a similarity of the early conditions. I am laying my ass on the line but I am predicting the third week of March for morels in Southern Indiana. Check back with you then and happy hunting to all!! Jeremy

More rain coming this week and by easter things should be popping. Additional Comments: Conditions are shaping up nicely. Will keep you posted. Good luck to everyone. He replied to my photo request: I still had them in the fridge soaking. My wife made fun of me for keeping such small mushrooms. I got the best picture I could but my camera is not the best. I threw in something for scale so you could see how small they were. Don't ask me how I saw them to begin with, I was rooting around in the leaf litter and just happened to notice them, I will be back this weekend if this cold front breaks up. Will keep everyone posted. I really enjoy your message board by the way. Take care. John.

Today is the first I have found greys under cedar trees in Tn. I hunted in central Il. this weekend to no avail. I plan to hit Il. again at the end of this month as well as central In. Pecuiliar that near the cedars there were obvious wash out trenches from the flood rain conditions with greys fighting to get through the debris. They were all very large greys so say the least. Has anyone ever tried a black light at night to find greys that are known to be in a particular area. I feel embarassed to elaborate!!!! This is an interesting thought..... Maybe they would show up very plainly with a black light at night.... Has anyone tried this? Let me know- Chris M. EMAIL

I am originally from western Missouri and learned to hunt in 1966. I hunt, and enjoy eating, many different varieties. Most people do not realize thet Morels do in fact grow this deep in the south. In the deep south, I have yet to receive a report of a black Morel, only yellow/gray ones, so I am not sure if the black ones do grow this far south, or is it that you would just need to go out in Jan. or Feb, to find these? -Chris Matherly

Tomi Oehlschlaeger, found morels,  - general location: Eddyville Ky, Growing Conditions: along a gravel road, that used to have an old railroad running through the area, Additional Comments: I believe that the morels that we have been finding here are blacks. I initially thought that they were greys because, well, they looked grey! However, I now believe that they were just very fresh black morels. We found 25+ last weekend (March 30), and the conditions at that time were VERY wet. I went back April 2 and found 15 more. We only found 10 this weekend(April 7). I don't think any more have popped since last weekend as we have had cold weather and no rain. How much longer after the blacks do the half-frees come up? Less than a week most of the time.....How about the yellows?  Two weeks or longer....The leaves aren't out on the trees here yet, so it's hard to identify them. Anyone think the season is later than last year?  It is definately at least 7-10 days later than last year.- Chris M. Happy hunting!

Jamie Carson, found morels, - general location: West Frankfort area,Williamson Co. Growing Conditions: Around tulip trees in low land. Additional Comments: Found 12 grey morels, this is the first time I've found more greys before finding the blacks, only 10 of them and I've been hunting heavy in my usual spots.

Today (4-07-02) I am seeing half a dozen new ones popping up. They GRow quite fast! Over the course of eight hours I watched four new ones pop-up! I am now waiting for them to get big...then I will gobble them up! Yummy! Growing Conditions: Found in newly developed area at edge of bark dust. I know the grounds keepers in the area and no pesticides have been used on ground.

Greys and blacks are two different species. Blacks are tannish colored when very young. Greys turn into yellows with age.-Chris M.

Jeremy Marsh, found false morels-Gyromitra Esculenta, - general location: WestCentral Indiana in Hendricks Co. Growing Conditions: on a hillside growing in rich soil and leaf litter right next to a large White Sycamore, Additional Comments: I have been combing the surrounding woods, trying not to disturb too many leaves and flora... Happy hunting to all and if there are any cute gal morel hunters out there, come find me. It is even rarer!! to find a good gal then a morel

Tony, found morels, - general location: I have found a few every year in my yard on April 2, 2002. Independence, Oregon, Growing Conditions: edge of grass line and bark dust, Additional Comments: What is the best conditions in Oregon to find Morels? I haven't been able to find any in the woods. I don't think they grow in the areas where Douglas firs are because there just isn't enough sun light and the ground is to mossy and there is not enough leaf foliage. I'm originally from Indiana but the conditions in Oregon are quite different. Somebody please help. fidlert@pacifier.com

Anyone else having any luck with morels in NE Kansas? By the looks of things, they ought to be up any time now; been checking spots from last year ( this is my 2nd year morel hunting), but no luck. If Johnny I is out there, I wanted to thank him for turning me on to the joys of Whitetail shed hunting. I've found 6 so far this past winter; a beautiful 5 pt., 3-4 pt., and 2-3 pt. No pairs, though.

It is just too early, did manage to find a few perfect spots that will surely produce in the next several weeks(there was plenty of cup fungus) but it seems the season is about 2-3 weeks behind normal. We're good on weather though a sprinkle wouldn't hurt. So what do you do when you've survived the worst chanterelle season in recent memory and you're waiting on the merkles to pop? Check your PORCINI spot. Here is what I found this morning...the white No.1 was about 3 inches below ground.

Denton Bragg morel - general location: Newport, TN.  Additional Comments: Hi Chris! I've been looking almost every day for the past 3 weeks in the woods behind my studio. I had reports of 50 or so blacks found in the Norris TN area about 3 weeks ago. They just started here-I'm in a much higher elevation. Today I found around 10 esculenta, left the smallest to grow. Our earlier cold spells definitely retarded the season, but the conditions are excellent now. These were in poplar, oak, pawpaw, hackberry, and cedar thickets popping up on the slopes and along a flat path on all exposures. Also, my friend Bob Lilly in Columbus, NC found yellows along a private road cut next to a black rat snake (a mycorhyzal association?) ! Happy Hunting!

Tom Farren morel - general location: Found in Siler City, North Carolina Growing Conditions: Found near a small creek near some poplars.  Additional Comments: Only found two, but that's already better than last year. It was kinda dry but they appeared to be fresh. only about 2 inches tall.

Bill morel - general location: An undisclosed location near Baltimore, MD. Growing Conditions: Beside a stream in very rich soil (and one near a fox carcass. Yum!)  Additional Comments: Five blacks and one yellow large enough to pick. One black too small to pick. They were rather dry so we arrived just in time. We would post pictures, that would mean we would have to wait even longer before we could eat them.

Tony Breeden - general location: Georgia Additional Comments: I have went out the last three days with no luck. It  looks like the season may be over for central Georgia. I will try going north this week. If anybody has found any morels around the greater Atlanta area recently please post a message. Thanks...

Charles Richmond, found  morels, - general location: Athens, OH...Athens/Morgan county border. Growing Conditions: These Black morels, (Morchella Esculanta), 22 blacks and 1 grey were found on the ridgetops in an area that contains many vines, much moss, and plenty on thorny bushes. This spot is always the first area we find morels each and every year. Additional Comments: So far the morel tally in our area has been poor, they can be found only by the serious hunter. It's really not worth it unless you truely love the morel. We got about 1.0" of rain 2 days ago, so I'm hoping things will pick up.

Growing Conditions: The 1 morel[after 2 1/2 hrs]in a slight valley in the middle of a forest, the reds were just off the bank of the lake around a dead tree[totally dead couldnt tell you what it was, maybe walnut]  Additional Comments: Ive never eaten beefsteaks...how are they prepared and what do they taste compared to the morels...also its about 90deg here and totally dry, does this speed up the season in our area or kill it[the weather has been the same up in St.Joseph Mo.but they got rain]or will it wait for rain????

Belva Thomason, morel,  - general location: Grayson County, Kentucky, Growing Conditions: Ash trees, rich sandy soil, also around Mayapple, Additional Comments: When we first moved here about 10 years ago, we found over 4,000 morels that spring (we have about 40 acres of woodland), as the years go by, I find less and less. I would like any information on how morels grow and if there is anything I can do when hunting them to make sure they return the next spring. Should I give the woods a rest for a couple of years? I just don't want to do anything that will wipe out the morels completely? Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks. Belva, one good thing that you should always do is use a mesh bag, not a plastic bag when you pick morels, this will let the spores fall out and spread. I even go to the point of blowing 2 or 3 times on each morel to blow the spores out...--Chris M.

Stephanie Weber, morel,  - general location: Our Farm in Northern Casey County, Kentucky , Growing Conditions: Under a group of Apple trees near our home; we live in a forested Knob region in Central Kentucky. Additional Comments: This is my first morel discovery on the farm. When I first saw the mushroom, I had no idea what it was. At first, I thought it was some type of wasp nest that had fallen off the tree to the ground. As soon as I touched it, I knew it for what it was!! So Excited, I jumped on the the computer to do a search on google. I found this page. Thanks for letting me post. Stephanie, glad you found us! My Great Grandfather help build the court house in Casey County, KY, he married a "Casey", hence the name "Casey County". Do you know any Matherly's there? I used to hunt "Dryland Fish" with my cousin "Doc" Matherly- Chris M.

brian h., morel, - general location: Lawrence, Ks, Growing Conditions: Along south facing banks of Kansas River, Additional Comments: found my first morels of the season 4-16-02; only 2 5" yellows (?). We could really use some rain in NE Kansas, at least around Lawrence. Also found a nice mess of Coprinus micaceus, which I added into a mushroom pasta. Had the morels for dessert!

Tomi Oehlschlaeger, morel, - general location: Ballard Co. Kentucky, Growing Conditions: Under tulip poplar trees on sloping areas. Additional Comments: We found close to 400 morels this past weekend! (April 14) We visited a friend's farm that where we had successfully hunted last year. This year though, most of the morels we found were greys or yellows. We only found a few half-frees and blacks. Last year we found mostly half-frees, so we were very excited with our find this year. I happened upon an area that I've only dreamed about before - I found 57 greys in about a 6' by 8' area. The biggest surprise was finding a small bed of morels in my own yard upon our return home. I thought I was hallucinating, but sure enough, we found 6 - 7 large greys. Imagine that - morels in my own yard! (they were growning under a ginko tree)

Peter B., morel, - general location: Pierce and Snohomish Counties, WA, Growing Conditions: Found under cottonwoods, Additional Comments: Working in the woods in western Washington State (Pierce County) I found a variety of morels I am familiar with which has a loosely and incompletely attached cap which grows under cottonwoods in our area. I brought them home (Snohomish County) and my son tells me "oh, we have those growing out in our driveway". I investigate, end sure enough, growing amongst unsplit madrona firewood which has been laying around for a year are a dozen or more mushrooms which look just like morels I am familiar with except the cap is firmly attached to the stem -- no gap between the stem and the cap. Any Pacific Northwesterners familiar with this variety associated with madrona?

George, morel, - general location: Found 13 blacks and one small grey, in central Indiana. Growing Conditions: They were found in the clearings of tulip populars.  Additional Comments: It will be interesting and maybe somewhat disappointing what this extreme heatwave will do to the season. The morels seem to like all things to be in order. This near 20 degrees to near 90 degree weather we've had the last two weeks is a shocker to all living things.

Terry Johnson, morel, - general location: Found more Morels...this time right outside my front door in Portland OR. This is my first year looking for Morels. Can't seem to find them anywhere in the woods. But seem to find them in the city! Also found what I believe to be Oyster's First time find so I am a little wary...They were growing on the West side of a dead Alder tree, Light tan, short off center stalk, Smelled kinda bad. I did not obtain a spore print. I will go soon and get some for further analysis... Growing Conditions: Morels were found in edge of bark line, no grass present. Should be the perfect time of the year, but the Mayberries aren't blooming yet and when they do---they're out there. Supposed to get alot of rain this weekend and they should pop up after the rain and the sun comes out. They're a little late this year. I think they will be up around the 21st or 22nd of April---that's when we will look again. The only thing we've brought back so far is ticks.

Jeremy Marsh, gray morels, - general location: Hendricks County, Indiana. Growing Conditions: lowlands by a creek clustering around a live Elm. Additional Comments: I have been scouting the woods for the last five weeks and had began to give up hope finding those precious morels until this morning. Encountering a few pleasant people on my regular hunting grounds and congratulating them on finding a small gray and a snakehead, I commenced to searching a several acre plateau. Much to my chagrin, not a single morel was to be found. My brother was searching some lowlands and I lost sight of him. Upon his return home for lunch, I became very excited when he presented a bag of fresh morels. After lunch we descended to the side of the creek I had erroneously neglected searching, and I felt like crying, for there were a dozen more gray morels to be picked and a few that we marked to check over the next few days. our total so far today has been about three dozen and we are about to head back out. Don't give up people!! There will be morels in your future too. It seems the majority are hiding in the tangles and beneath the leaves now. Good luck and thanks for this site Chris Matherly!!

Anthony Tassinello & Ben & Phil, morel, - general location: El Dorado National Forest, Growing Conditions: Roadsides, 2nd year logged areas, IN SNOW!, disturbed earth. Additional Comments: For the third year in a row I've found the first morels of the delayed season in a spot that I can only assume is a "natural". I don't know much about this occuring in No. California so any thoughts would be appreciated. Normally, I hunt exclusively in 1st year burns or logging slash a few weeks after the snow melt and find the regular stuff...gyromitra, half-frees, a variety of cup fungus, spring Boletus etc. and the same held true yesterday. The scraps of Boletus we found were dined on furiously by a furry woodland creature complete with teeth marks and all, it seemed to like the moist tuber-like gills the best. As for the morels we found about 60 blacks and blondes in 2nd and 3rd year logging. We just got about a foot of snow this past week in the Sierras so even at 3000' they were popping up thru the melting snow. It should be a season to remember...the wildflowers are just begining at the lower elevations as well, CA. Poppy, Lupine, Indian Paint Bru! sh and the Dogwood trees are all waking up.

Jack Rose, morel, - general location: Clinton County Ohio, Growing Conditions: Mixed trees ash, oak, elm. Lot of decaying logs. Heavily wooded. Additional Comments: We've just had a lot of rain and storms. teperature in the 70's but dropping this weekend.

tim mickem, morel, black sponge, and pop -ups, - general location: northeast indiana, Growing Conditions: rich high ground apple groves & dead elms , Additional Comments: ppl need to learn not to pull the roots, instead pinch them off undisturbed, ppl that don't know how to harvest roons should stay home or just pay someone to hunt them for them. But no they would rather go out and take it upon themselves to go out and ruin great hunting areas for those of us that have hunted these places for years without harming the spores. Seeing these pic of mushrooms are nice ,but to those that pull roots and all makes me sick. If you wanna hunt them then at least take the time to find out what you're doing first. don't ruin it for all of us

Amanda, morel, - general location: Mishawaka, Indiana, Growing Conditions: They were under oak trees in a small forest.

LARRY, morel, - general location: Found 63 morels on the 19th in Leavenworth, Kansas in two small areas where I find them every year. Found 20 more on the 20th in the same areas.  Growing Conditions: Small areas of woods with a variety of dying trees, including elm. Found about 25 half frees along a creek bank in the woods and about another 20 small to medium blacks and greys in thickets. Also ten or so fair sized yellow in the field right next to the woods. The rest were medium greys in another small patch of similar woods I hunt, but this patch is in a small basin with no creek. Additional Comments: I am glad they are finally here. I have been looking every day for the last week with no luck. With the rain we are getting this weekend, the sun should really get these bad boys to popping in the next week. Good luck and happy shrooming. Thanks a lot for this site, I enjoy it quite a lot.

Bill & Julia in MD, morel, - general location: Near Baltimore, MD. Growing Conditions: On a hillside among Beech, Tulip, Persimmon or Paw Paw. Big ones seemed to stick close to a small leafed shrub with tiny thorns. Additional Comments: One I thought was a tiny black (1") last week had balloned to a 3" yellow. When we found 20 we were excited, at 50 we were ecstatic. By the time we were finished (150) we were feeling a bit delirious. Left plenty of small ones for next time. Perhaps the earthquake shook them out of the ground?

Dora, morel, - general location: West of Indianapolis, Growing Conditions: Bottom of hill around a dead elm, Additional Comments: Went this morning found 2 blacks and 15 grays. Grays were 3' to 5'in. Bill & Julia in MD, morel, - general location: April 20, Near Baltimore, MD. Growing Conditions: About 25 in same spot we hit before, 80 on a ridge over a mile away. Growing conditions & trees: same. Additional Comments: Thank goodness it is finally raining. The second spot looks even better than the first. Thanks to whoever suggested looking on hill tops. The ones we found here were about 2-3", firm and moist. They probably were too small to see last week. For each one we picked there were several that were too small. Will go back next week to see if those are ready to be, uh, liberated, yeah, that's the word. I guess in a way it is a good thing our former favourite spot was wiped out by a tornado.
