4-11-00 Daisy writes: Hey Chris! One of the poachers I bumped into this weekend ( a particularly helpful and thus welcome one) told me he has seen "yellows" on my property almost a foot tall. (A) Is that possible?, and (B) Would the yellows be the Vulgaris? I've patrolled the property for all of my life and have never seen anything but blacks. It is entirely possible I've missed something glaring but that big? Your thoughts, Daisy.  Daisy, you may have been quiting too early for the big ones to be up, they are up to 6 weeks later than the black morels. They are not Morchella vulgaris, but Morchell crassipes, which means "thick-footed". They have been reported in size up tro 18, maybe even 20" tall, my biggest is 14", weighed right at 3lbs by itself! So keep looking, and don't give up, they are there!-chris

4-12-00 Bradley A, general location: In Clay County, Illinois in a woods we have hunted for 30+ years. We found 865 in 3 days. How can I save them as I am now back in South Carolina? Bradley, you can dry them on a screen or get a food dehydrator. Or you can freeze them. I like to fry them up, and freeze them already cooked, when you get them back out, just place them on a cookie sheet, just like you do onion rings, to reheat them. This is my own method in which I have always had good luck with... -chris

I stopped counting after 2000 Chris, I'm sorry but it was too silly just a marvelous array of shapes and sizes from 1mm to 6 or 7", doubles, triples, in sand, between burnt logs in gulleys even some growing IN a small stream. Just when you think you have figured out this curious mushroom they grow in the full sunlight in tall grass.... I shot some incredible photos that I'll post after the next two weeks or so, there is a 4000 acre burn to hunt yet as well as another 140,000 acre burn East of Arcata CA. that is just starting to fire up...when I close my eyes I see morels...HELP!

Finally, the mother-load we've been dreaming of (and drooling about). It ALMOST makes up for the lousy season we had last year - so dry and feeble and heartbreaking. This fruiting seems to be a little earlier than we noramlly expect, but i'm not surprised considering the rain and the mild winter we had. We also found dryad's saddle (like watermellon rind - smell it sometime!) and moose-ear fungus and what we think is mica-cap and also an enormous false morel the size of a softball. Plenty of big and old and twisted half-free morels, too gnarly. But the bounty!! YUM

Found some large flat type growing on a dead hickory, can't identify yet. These have a stem where as others found growing on dead trees do not seem to have a stem. Additional Comments: How long does season last? Do mushrooms pop up the size they are or do they start small & grow larger? I have found some very small & wonder if left a few days if they would be larger or just dried out.

L. Von Essen, - general location: Northwest Missouri, in a holler along a small stream, east side of a slope under semi-dense cover, found around 2 1/2 dozen grey morels and one very large yellow morel, Additional Comments: I soaked the morels in salt water to try and drive out the bugs, but there were very small worm type bugs, about the size of pepper that seemed to continue to come out in the hundreds! What is the best way to get rid of these pests? I love morels but it sure spoiled my appetite to see them. Somebody must know a trick to get rid of those pesky critters??? Soaking in salt water is the best method, continue to rinse them, then, let the water run in your bowl, and over-flow, keeping the morels from falling out, let the water continue running over them, swishing the morels around in the bowl. The bugs float up, and out of the bowl as it overflows. -Chris Matherly webmaster

We only covered about 1/8th of the woods. Half of them were grey sponge and the other 1/2 were spikes. Some of the greys were the smallest I've ever seen and other greys were humongous. I haven't had a chance to look for yellows yet at the creek, but plan to soon and will get some pics. What is a false morel and do they grow here. Are they deadly or what? I would like to know so I don't pick some by mistake.Talk later, Mike. Wildlife paintings, Michael R. Matherly's Fine Art Studio  -Go to the current photo of the week, it displays a false morel....
