Too much rain, especially for the woods without any drainage. My daughter's place is very hilly. Should have gone sooner in the season (I did get her into it finally--been trying for years!) Now that they're out her front door all down her hill--think she loves the convenience, wouldn't you?

Growing in the lowlands along streams on south facing slopes no more than 10 to 15 ft from Fir trees. It has been relatively dry this spring in north Idaho ( we only have about 25% of normal precip for the month) so our find was a little suprising despite our very light rain on friday morning. Sqrapper 7 writes: Chris, I found morels in Colorado. My husband and I were mending fences high in the Aspens, on a ranch outside of De Beque CO.  I was astound, I thought the morels only grew in Oregon where I was raised as a child.  My Dad would take us 4 Kids up in the woods and we would find big brown paper sack full of Morels. Then we would enjoy them for dinner. My husband did not believe me that the mushrooms I found today were morels. I had to prove to him with the excellent pictures you have on your web site. Evelyn, Sqrapper7@aol.com

Growing Conditions: under just starting to die elms as well under a few wild apple trees, Additional Comments: Morels are becomming harder to find in quantity groupings... girth becoming larger height avg. now 5-6" and more golds than greys...We could use  a thunderstorm for moisture is the key now that temps are in the 70's...Consensus around here(table talk) is a theory that ozone from lightning may affect mushroom spore activation...any fellow thoughts on this out there?? Picked 5# in 2 hours yesterday, several were close to unsalvageable..ate them, sold the rest... Local orchard paying $12.50 a #... Please send rain our way....good pick'n.. Winona Greg...

Chris B.

Kevin Drager, morel, - general location: I found them in Baker County in eastern Oregon.  Growing Conditions: They seemed to be more prominent along the sides of streams in somewhat open areas with exposure to sunlight. There weren't many this year compared to the last couple of years at this time. It seems really dry and hasn't been warm enough following the small amount of precipitation that we've had. Does anyone know of other good morel hunting in Eastern Oregon and Idaho? Is anyone finding morels this year in either of those places?

john may,  morel, - general location: Deleware county ,Ohio, Growing Conditions:  young trees and small weeds, Additional Comments: I found a morel 2 days ago that weighs almost 1/2 pound and is 9 3/4" long inOhio, is this any kind of record? thank you ,John. Growing Conditions: Under spruce, waste land, morning to mid day sun, afternoon shade.  Additional Comments: These mushrooms grow wild all over the place in our region of Ontario. I've eaten them since I was about five (now 32). Sometimes there are hundreds, sometimes fewer. The trick was always to remember the spot where a "big tree" -- like oak, hardwood, or even large branches, had fallen down from the year before. They are definitely in that spot the next year (spores hide in trees until they are dislodged). I was amazed to find a mushroom guild on the Internet.People up here always thought I was wierd for eating them (and a few other things).

Hey Chris, Well...it has been too wet in British Columbia for the fire morels and too dry in Alberta for the same. Lots of "naturals" in southern B.C. The average price for the fire Morels here in B.C. is sitting around 10.00 Cdn./pound. I'll be going back to check the Princeton fire in about 8 days. Very late year here, but the weather is starting to co-operate now. There was a few morels in the heavy burned wet spots, but they would not be considered as a "flush". The big Alberta fire that everyone is waiting on, - is approx. 200 thousand acres big! I'll keep you posted.  Garry (Beave)

October 26th, 2002: MAry Jo Hardwick, found:  I'm not sure!  I am looking for information....We live in South Central Mississippi, and our back yard has erupted with loose "stacks" of rusty-orange, smooth, medium to large mushrooms/fungi.  I would like to know what these are, and why, after all these years, they have started popping up.  There are at least two-dozen large masses. most of them in groups.  Thanks for any info you can give me, or where I might go on-line to identify them.  Mary Jo Hardwick, - general location: Clinton, MS South Central
Growing Conditions: Under oak trees;  we are having an extremly, unsesonable wet month.
Mary, these could be a number of different mushrooms. A photo would greatly help. Possibilities are: Jack-O-Lantern, Bolete, Russula, Lactarius, and many others.Send a photo if you can.- Chris M.

October 29th, 2002: Dave, found  Craterellus cornucopioides, - general location: Roane County,TN  Growing Conditions: open woods, under oak and beech , Additional Comments: I have found well in excess of 50 lbs of the Horn of Plenty in one general location.

November 17th, 2002: Tom Vanchieri, found  Lion's Mane, - general location: Eddington, Maine , Growing Conditions: in a large beach forest on a dying beach   I found one there and a month later another in a different location on the same tree. Additional Comments: I have been searching for Oyster mushrooms this year but have found none.  This is strange as in  years past, I have always found them in the same places at the same approx time.  Also worth noting this year around the end of August we had an explosion of horse/field/pinkbottoms mushrooms to the extent I have never seen.  They were everywhere. In driving around looking and picking it was amazing the quanity and size of them.  We had a very dry summer. In late August we had a couple of days of much needed heavy rain, thats when the mushrooms came, everywhere.  I am wondering if the lack of rain contributed to the absence of the Oysters.

Basically everywhere you look! Additional Comments: Chris, after a long dry summer it rained 3" on Nov. 3rd. then didn't rain again for 30 some days. What resulted was a fantastic Bolete season. I'm about to eclipse the 150lb mark for 5 weeks of hunting. Very few worms just lots of no.1's and "shavers" as we like to call them....the buttons shaved on a mandolin and dressed with kosher salt, extra virgin olive oil, and a few drops of lemon and pepper.
