Jim V. writes: Chris, My daughter and I went out this morning and hunted mushrooms north of Iowa City. We found several large yellow morels that totaled at least 2 pounds. The timber is still damp but the mushrooms seemed a little dry. I think it is winding down around here. I have been hunting mushrooms since I was a kid and I'm 59 years old. This is the first time I've found yellow morels in this area in the month of April. Before I retired I was taking the second week of May for vacation to hunt mushrooms. I would have missed them this year. I think I will head north next week and bike/mushroom the Root River Trail in Minnesota. Good luck and happy hunting, Jim Voss

.Brian C.- general location: Grand Traverse county, Michigan.Growing Conditions: Good luck in "moundy" areas. Whites found frequently in semi-developed areas (old cabin driveways in the woods etc.) , Additional Comments: Filled 2 10 lb. onion sacks in 5 hrs. Man, this is pretty fun. Kind of addictive! Enjoy yourselves in the woods, it's great to be out, eh?
Gary, - general location: New Hampshire,Growing Conditions: In my front lawn under Maple trees. The spores must have been in the bark mulch I ise for flowers. The area gets partial sun., Additional Comments: I would eat them but i am afraid they may be the false, or poison morel. They are tan, sharply coveluted, cap is one piece to the stem, hollow and white rubbery texture on inside. Sounds like they could be Verpa Bohemia, a false morel, but edible, with caution.- Chris

Woodchuck, - general location: Western Wisconsin, Pierce County, Growing Conditions: Last week in mown grass, next to dead small elm tree.Yesterday, in woods of many elms, near dead ones, especially by clumps of moss. Additional Comments: Chris. Why did you think Gary, from New Hampshire (May 12) may have a false morel? His description sound like what I find and find delicious. I would say the inside is white a sort of rubbery. Convoluted vs many small pockets might be a question, but if hollow, aren't they the great ones? He mentioned cottony inside, not hollow, this is consistent with Verpa bohemia, a false morel, but a good edible. -Chris
