March 18th, 2009: Mark Warren, yellow morel - general location = These mushrooms were in Jacksonville, Arkansas on the 18th of March 2009. They were on an eastern hillside. I am not sure what kind of trees there were (I think there are alot of Oak trees with a few ash and elms scattered throughout. Growing Conditions = The elm trees are in "bloom" with those little fisheye blooms that grow on them. Oak trees are full of those pollen buds. Other trees are abscent of leaf growth or just starting to bud. Red buds are in full bloom. Additional Comments = I havent seen one of these in twenty years, and I found these about 200 yards out of my office door! I wonder what species grows first? Can I post a pic?

Additional Comments = mushroom grow along last year burn on 299 west of redding east of ureka ca startting to pop up around 2000+ elevation with the weather around 70 during day an 40 during night by the first week of 4/09 no doubt you will find mother load of burn morel an natural morel in all around this burn witch is almost 1,000,000 acre burn last summer buyer there in around that area is orady paying $16 to $22 per pound for it .

March 22nd, 2009: Ralph, other, trying to find out - general location = Danville, California, Growing Conditions = Grassy area about 3-4 feet not too far from trees, Additional Comments = Have never seen anything like them. about 8" tall total. Stems were white with little fuzzy peels all over. The caps were shaped like a partially opened table umbrella. Unique very gold tip, very gold like they were painted with a gold spray can. A few black spots on the gold tips plus spread out on the rest of the white caps. What are these? Does anyone have a picture as they were gone the next day when I went to photograph them.

March 24th, 2009; kenny,= black morel - general location = claremore oklahoma, Growing Conditions = found 35 black morels few have been up for several days most popped in the last 48 hrs...most were found along north facing slope of a hill...this spot usually produces much more and would expect more to show up in the next week or so especially if we get the 1-2 inches of rain expected tonight. Additional Comments = northeast oklahoma was hit by a very bad ice storm dec 19 2007 and the woods are covered with busted branches..i have heard conflicting stories on whether or not this will be good for shrooming..seems to me the shrooms will have a hard time coming up with these branches on the ground...do you think that once these branches start to decay will the shrooming get better? good luck to all this season

These are a species of Agaricus, related to a portabella, make sure they do not stain yellow on the stem, and they are most likely very good to eat. -Chris M

March 28th, 2009:Hi Chris, Just wanted to send a few pics of my first finds of the year. First pic is a micro black shroom from Hocking Co., Ohio 3-18-09, found another about 20 feet from it. I went back to check their growth this afternoon and found 18 total. The 2 that I found first had grown to about 3/4". I left those go to grow for another week or so The second pic is from Scioto Co.,Ohio,3-27-09 black morel. I picked 28 just enough for a good taste of fresh ones and left alot of smaller shrooms for the next time. I still have a few dehydrated shrooms left from last year but my mouth is watering for some fresh ones. :) Terry S

March 28th, 2009:Chris, Reporting this find in Morgan County Tennessee. We have had a few gentle rains, warm temps and these were found in periwinkle beneath a few ash trees, oaks and growing in old coal cinders. Next week should be good for finds, Im sooo ready!

Large Ash Found 21 morchella angusticeps and 4 morchella esculentas
Additional Comments = These were found in an early spot for Black Morels. The
place usually produces Morchella Esculentas as well as angusticeps. I did find 4
small esculentas at a neighbors by his front walk. They were dwarfed only about
1 1/2 inches tall. Very early for esculentas Id say. The mayapples are mid
growth the red buds are just beginning the flowering. The ferns I actually avent
seen yet. I will be hunting a private farm maybe mid week maybe first of next
week

March 30th, 2009:cbayla, Was out fishing behind my house in Buford Ga, saw one and looked around and they were all over the place, didn’t have a bag, took my shirt of and tied in a knot, filled it up… going back to get them all!! I was freaked out didn’t even know they grew down here, just moved down from Chicago and usually go hunting up there every year in Dixon il. Never saw this many in one spot already have about 35pnds I found today.

March 30th, 2009: Chris, My son and I gathered a total of 52 Morels this weekend in Monroe County, Mississippi. All of these except one were found in a wooded area with mostly small Sweet Gum trees and a few pines, cedars, and red oaks. The one exception was a big Morchella esculenta (classic yellow) that was found growing all by itself under a very large Tulip Poplar. This one is a very rare find for Mississippi as far as I know. Up until this year I did not know classic yellows could be found this far south. We also found one large lion's mane and a few pig ears. Scott F.

March 30th, 2009: I found five black morels on Sunday(03/29).Very young ranging in size from 1/2 inch to 2 1/2 inches.Growing conditions are the base of a southeast facing slope under sycamore trees in Putnam County,Tn.I believe this is the very beginning of the season here.

March 30th, 2009: Morel_hunter107, grey morel - general location = Scott County, Missouri, Growing Conditions = flat forest floor around elms. Additional Comments = found three greys, four large black, about two dozen nice golden fat half-free.

April 1st, 2009: Chris, A brief write up and a pic, the first find of the season in the Raleigh, NC area. South of Raleigh, NC in Wake County in the high sunny ridges amongst the Tulip Populars. Very late this year I have generally find the first black in Mid Mar but did not find the first handful until Mar 28th this year. They should be all over the place next weekend as we have had some good rain in the last week and the days are warm all week. William R. Pinkstaff

April 1st, 2009: Chris, i have a report from lower michigan of small black morels found april 1st 2009 (no joke). your previous report from michigan find on march 17th was ridiculous. these wer found by my cousin in Barry county, Michigan in popular grove. there was only 2 after looking hard. thanks al hayes -- little-shroomer

Additional Comments = Been finding a few here and there, but someone is just
ahead of me cause I am finding alot of stalks. Does anyone know of any
particular insects that inhabit morels? The insects pretty much filled the sink
when I was washing them off.
April 2nd, 2009:IndianaMtnGrl, grey morel - general location = Brevard, NC, Growing Conditions = In the flats under Tulip Poplars, Additional Comments = I was lucky to find these 2 lone greys. It's definately wet enough. The sun needs to come out and warm up the ground a bit.
April 2nd, 2009:Helen, grey morel - general location = Near Bardstown Kentucky, Nelson County, Growing Conditions = Our area was so damaged in the ice and wind storms in Fe. its hard to tell, but always near Cedars and Tulip Populars. We found Greys and Half Free ( dog pecker) Additional Comments = The greys are still small, so walk slowly, look carefully we found both where they never were before
