May 4th, 2008:Anthony Tassinello,
burnsite morel - general location =
Plumas
County, Northern California
Growing Conditions = Moonlight Fire, Hat Creek Logging Additional Comments = Hey
Chris, I see you landed in Cali, I hope it went okay for you. As for me and my
foraging friends this has been the toughest April I've ever hunted. From the
low elevations 2500'-3200' in logged area we found enough blacks for dinner,
mostly on Sierra-Pacific logging company lands, 3 weeks ago. Conditions
extremely dry and cold. Morels came up and dried perfectly crisp with moist
stems. Nothing bigger than 3". Later in the mid 3000' range in our natural
spots a fraction of what we would normally find, I'm talking enough to fill your
hand. At the Moonlight Fire last weekend along creeks in the 3000'-4000' range
we found cup fungus and maybe 40 blondes and greys all small and feeling the
effects of hot/cold and dry conditions. I won't be back there too steep and
dry, burnt like a moonscape. Upper elevs. may yield if it flattens out and
isn't on someone's mining claim. In logging upto 5000' as of Monday conditions
were again dry and drying out where the snow seems to be evaporating not soaking
into the earth. No morels at all despite perfect terrain. No rain in
site...driest consecutive March-April in 100 years in California. My worst
season to date. Maybe the upper elevations will yield but hunting is real
tough. Some reports of morels coming from the Shasta-Trinity range. Oregon
morels in abundance retailing for $39 a pound. Cheers

May 4th, 2008:Chris, With the exception of the foray a few years ago with you near Macon, I finally found some morels up near Cumming, GA. My brother came in from Arizona and we were planning a trip to Illinois to hunt morels. I came across an area in the winter near Cumming that looked like it might be good. We thought we would hunt this spot (April 14) since we were not leaving for Illinois until the next morning. We were in the woods a short time and I found a single small morel. A few minutes later in some poplar trees, I came across the biggest patch of morels that I have ever seen. They were a little old, but we were able to salvage a few. We were about a week too late. (Picture attached). Our Illinois hunt was a little early and we only found about 70.JIm Finley

May 4th, 2008:The morels are still coming strong in central Ohio. Today we found another mix of 85 yellows, 91 half-frees, 73 tulip morels and 28 verpa conicas. The ash trees have been really productive this year (with like 6-10 on a tree), which is unusual for this area. We found another 12 under an apple tree, which is also not common here. It seems like any and every morel mycelium out there is pushing up mushrooms this year. -- hugh, Columbus, OH

May 5th, 2008:Yellow Morels found in a very old mountainside apple orchard. Roanoke County VA
We found 340+ Yellow Morels in 4 hours the same day as the Virginia Foray, April
26th. I was thinking to myself while hunting, "I hope the Foray is doing this
well". You guys found 700 the first day so I would say you had some success
too. I think the foray took place not too far from us. My next door neighbor
spotted a vehicle with Georgia vanity plates spelling out the word “MOREL” on
his way home Saturday. I hope to meet up with you guys attending the VA foray
next year. This trip out was my wife’s first hunt, and my best hunt ever. A
neighbor very kindly invited my wife and I and a few others to hunt with her on
her families private slice of heaven. My wife and I were the only ones to
show. The hunt began quite well, with us finding 8-10 under the third tree we
looked under. It only got better from there. Most places were we found one, we
eventually found many more. There were patches where these beauties were
everywhere the eye roamed. I hope all of you out there get to experience this
kind of hunt success at least once in your lives. There is nothing like
spotting the first then the second then 10 then 20, then realizing you are
standing over a couple, and turning around and seeing them everywhere. Having
to call over the others because there are so many beauties you cannot keep track
of them all, is just too cool. Under one tree we found 56 and another yielded
48.We stopped just before a downpour of biblical proportions began. We had
every intention of going back out but just decided to call it a day, with the
intention of returning Sunday with those who could not make it out Saturday.
(We did return Sunday, but did not have near the success as Saturday. Sunday’s
haul was still very good gathering another 60-70.) I asked if I could take all
the morels so I could count and photograph them. My neighbor agreed and I am
able to show you the photos of the results. We found a total 340+ morels.
They weighed in at 11 pounds 6.5 ounces. When I called a couple of my other
hunting buddies with the results they arrived within minutes and could not
believe the amount and bulk of what we found. We all planned a "tasting" for the
following evening and about 15 of us "sampled" nature’s delicious little gifts
to us. We had so many morels available that we decided we were going to try all
kinds of different ways of cooking them up. We had everything from cream cheese
and spinach stuffed morels to Cajun spicy morels, (my personal favorite!) We had
a wonderful evening with good friends, neighbors and family. We ate till we
were sick, divided up the rest of the haul. Now we are all preserving what is
left for future gatherings. What a fantastic weekend! I hung off one of the
rafters above the table to take the photos. We just could not get everything in
the photo without the distance. The silver ruler in the photo is 4 feet long,
for scale. You can also see a long neck bottle in the center of the zero. The
square is the same morels rearranged. The square is 3 feet by 4 feet. Thanks for
allowing me to share.Shane Kole - Roanoke VA

May 7th, 2008:Chris, Just thought I'd check in to let you know that the mojo has
carried on past the trip. Here are a couple pics of some nice ones I found
today. I've probably found about 100 or so since I left on Sunday.
Ohio is
definitely at peak right now. I found this big sponge after leaving the tough
part of the woods. I was leisurely walking back home along a trail and just
came upon it...4 inches off the trail. I no earthly idea how it managed to make
it to this size. The black here is the largest I've ever seen.I have no
delusions of a prize here...just thought I'd fill you in.
Best, Brian

Yesterday while my son and I were out driving, we spotted a freshly dead elm along a country road so we stopped to check it out, and as soon as I opened the car door I could see morels right in the grass next to the road! We got out and picked 39 in about 10 minutes (we had to get going). I have been finding them under just about every dead elm I've come across. I'm training the next generation right, 3 of my four kids have found mushrooms this year. DaddyO

May 9th, 2008: Hi Chris, I enjoy seeing the progression maps. I found my first mushrooms this year on Apr 25, and on the following days: Apr 27, May 2, May 4, May 7 near Oregon, MO. (Holt Co.) As a kid growing up in the 1960's, it was not uncommon to find 3 or 4 paper grocery sacks full of mushrooms a day. The season lasted from about Apr 15 to May 20( peaking around May 8 ). In recent years, the season has shortened considerably, usually lasting from about Apr 23 to May 2. That's not even half as long as it used to last. I have very little luck finding mushrooms around elm trees now. I would say that 95 % of all the mushrooms that I have found in the last 3 years have been around live sycamores. Bill McGuire

May 10th, 2008:Chris, Hello from me again in Wyoming. These morels came from Converse County. I found them in deciduous leaf litter and grass bunches. It has been raining the last few days a LOT for here. A couple of warmer days they will be popping like popcorn. My friend has these other mushrooms growing on his property. Habitat is altered earth zone planted with some grass and russian olive trees. Gently sloping ground with a high amount of organic debris in the soil...manure, tree debris etc. The mushrooms are a LOT like a blewit in appearance but wrong color. Margin is strongly incurved. No sign of annular ring or veil. Smell is like mild matsutake crossed with store bought agarics, pleasant mushroomy. They are almost subterranian in habit. Crowns of the cap just barely visible above the earth. Stem is solid and flesh is firm nice. This friend of mine says he regularly consumes them and so I must say they are an edible of some type. I suspedt that they are a trichloma of some type and am in the process of making a spore pring if they will cooperate. I have not eaten them and would prefer to know more about them.

May 14th, 2008:Dave snowbank false morel - general location = Angora burn site, South Lake Tahoe California -Growing Conditions = Conifer burnsite from last July, 6,000 to 6,500 ft, NW slopes just below snowline. Additional Comments = Was hoping to get some fire burn morels, but it was WAY too dry. The only ground that had any moisture was directly below melting snow, and that soil was too cold for true morels; by the time it warmed up it was totally dried out. Since Brian in Amador reported morels at 4,000ft for the past few weeks and rain last Tue/Wed, I was hoping it might fruit up higher by now - but it looks like no season this year in the Sierras. The last big snow we had was in early March, what little precip there was in the end of March and April (usually our wettest months) and the one shower in May must have been only in isolated spots. What a waste of a good fire. I hope the burn will produce next year, assuming conditions are better. Does anyone know if burnsites can fruit the second spring after a burn if they don't fruit the first spring...?

May 30th, 2008: Hello, Chris. I would like to report that I have spotted my first Chanterelle of 2008 here in Monroe County, MS. It was growing in my front yard of all places. So far I have only seen one, but this one was growing in the same location where I found a few of them last summer. It was located in a shady, mossy area under a large oak tree. I have checked some of my other usual chanterelle spots and I have not seen anything else popping up yet. We have had lots of rain lately, and I'm thinking I should be seeing more of them and possibly some black trumpets in about a week. Scott F.

August 15th, 2008: A big "Hey Ya'll", to Chris, from Debbie D. in Paducah, Ky: I am attaching pics of my home, which I've been in for almost 2 years now, and the strange clusters of tall, thin, tubular, black "somethings" that I found protruding from the ground, underneath it. I've ventured into the dark "underworld" beneath the floor of my double-wide, several times since we moved in, but this is the first time I've ever seen these. Just a few little tid-bits of info that may assist in the identification: -First found on August 11, 2008, they definitely were not there the last time I ventured into the darkness, last summer-My home is mostly surrounded by farm land (corn last year, beans this year) -We had a lot of rain this past spring, but we are not in a flood plane (although we are surrounded by land that is, for several miles) -My home sits on a concrete block foundation -Very dark, but only mildly moist soil underneath the home I would really like to know what these clusters of black, tubular fungi are, that my family and I are co-habitating with. I've seen many different types of "shrooms" throughout my rural / country life, but never anything like this. They actually look like they belong on the floor of the ocean. -Oh yeah! We do have a 1000 gal. septic tank which was emptied this spring / early summer. It was FULL! The tank is probably 30+ years old and very deep in the ground, and in close proximity to where the entry to the "underworld" is, and where the clusters are that I could see. O.K.! I thank you in advance for any info you may have on these strange things, and I apologize for taking up your time with any useless info that I probably included. Thank-you very much! & happy Shroom hunting! Debbie D.

August 29th, 2008: Hello, I have a question for you. We recently moved to
Hawthorne, Florida (it is in Northern Florida, close to Gainesville) and have
noticed mushrooms around that look a lot like Boletus Edulis to us. However,
would like to get a professional opinion. The ones that I find in the woods are
growing on the ground, often under lots of pine needles (you can see these
towards the bottom of the first picture). The ones that are found growing in
more sunny areas are more towards the top of the first picture. We believe the
mushroom in the second picture is the same species, but it had already started
to rot on top (smelled horrible). These kind of mushrooms are everywhere out
here. We are surrounded by hundreds of acres of land where you can look out
and see different types of fungi growing in every different direction. I
really appreciate all of your help and time. -Rick Cleveland

September 3rd, 2008: We just got back from our annual trip to Vermont, where we found a lot of nice mushrooms. Vermont had a very wet summer (unlike Ohio), so there was a quite lot of interesting stuff up. Highlights included: about a half dozen very nice Boletus edulis; roughly 2 dozen lobsters; dozens of hedgehogs (Hericium repandum); at least 6 large fruitings of comb tooth (3 types of Hericium in all), many chanterelles, scabers stalks (various leccinums), buling bolete, good lactarius, thousands of sheep polypores, and various others. It was a nice change from the dry dust bowl of Ohio over the last 2 months-- hugh

September 6th, 2008:
Dear Chris, I visited your web site looking to identify mushrooms that have been
popping up all summer in my vegetable garden. I thought they were interesting
and quite beautiful until my Carin terrier decided to eat them. After $150.00
spent at the vet and a sleepless night with a vomiting dog, I don't appreciate
their beauty any more! Maggie survived with an upset stomach and tests could not
find any liver or kidney damage.
What is so strange is that this dog NEVER eats anything....and now lives to hunt
them out.I spend every morning looking for them before she is allowed in the
yard. They have been popping up since July only in my vegetable garden. A
neighbor and my vet mentioned they have seen them in their flower beds this
year. This is the first time I have seen them. I spend quality time in my yard,
so I would have noticed them last year. They sometimes smell "earthy", but not
always. The stalk is spongy looking with the off white to orange colors from
bottom to top. The cap has wet brown goo on top. They come out of an egg sack
looking thing with white roots. What are they? How can I eliminate them from my
garden?

September 7th, 2008: Hi Chris....... I went out yesterday and found these at about 9000 ft elevation in the White Mountains of Arizona. As you can see in photo #1 the Chants are doing well, photo #2 of Lobsters, #3 is of a nice patch of Honeys, #4 is False Morel (unusual for this area at this time of year), #5 is a nice batch of King Bolete buttons, #6 is of Oysters, #7 is an Aspen Bolete, #8 are Shaggy Manes and #9 is of some Lobsters that I decided to keep. The area that I hunt in is in Northeastern Arizona in Apache County. When I tell people that I am finding about 10 wild edibles in Arizona they don't believe me. These mushrooms come on starting in July and last until mid September depending on when the Monsoon rains start and end. I also find morels in mid April to mid May in burn sites. I hope to find some Morels in logging sites that I am watching next year. You have a great site! Dan in Show Low Arizona.

September 13th, 2008: Good Afternoon. I have a TON of these mushrooms growing on some of the big huge decaying tree stumps in my yard. I'm curious to know what they are. I'd also like to make sure they aren't poisenous (although I already told the kids they are) because I have young kids and there are sooooooo many of these things. Thanks Signed Mom Blogger

September 13th, 2008: Chris, I have these growing in my ground covers, where I recently took down all the old aspens. They sure smell like morels, but I'm not a mushroom hunter, so caution first. Not to mention it's not spring! What do you think? Thanks for looking! Chuck Baglo Westminster, CO

September 14th, 2008: We finally got some real rain after 2 solid months of zero moisture, and a bunch of things are coming up now. There are lots of agaricus campestris, purple-spored puffballs and other yard mushrooms in our neighborhood. We also found two large batches of aborted entolomas and ringed honey mushrooms, along with oysters, chanterelles and gilled boletes at Mohican S.P. Hopefully all this rain will mean a good season for hen of the woods, or at least better than last year's terrible season -- hugh, Columbus, OH

September 14th, 2008: Hi Chris, I found your site today when I went searching for a possible identity for these mushrooms. I’ve found morels in my tiny suburban yard, so I thought I’d see if these are also edible. They smell so good I’d hate to miss out on something great. Attached are small images, I have full size ones if you’d like. Thanks in advance for any assistance! Found: Sept 14, 2008, Gaithersburg, Montgomery County, MD, USA. Suburban backyard, topsoil has been amended but not lately, in mostly shady area, under a maple tree canopy, directly on the ground (not on trunk, stump, or roots) Cap: Fairly uniform beige/fawn color, exactly blends in with fallen maple and birch leaves, slightly velvety or kid leather feeling surface, not hairy or scaly. Curl up and toward center. Gills: well defined, lighter than cap, not easily separated from cap, slightly forked at cap edge. Stem: slender, not perfectly straight, fibrous with fibers spiraling slightly along the length, not hollow. Flesh: creamy white, slightly spongy looking, Scent: I don't have any experience with wild or even exotic mushrooms... to me these smell delicious... like mild grocery store button mushroom, but not as strong and hints of butter. Age at photo: No idea... I just noticed them today. Recent Weather: 80’s for most of this week with rain on Tues. Dipped down to mid-70’s and drizzly on Fri. Sat and Sun (today) both 90, sunny, humidity close to 50%. Thanks in advance for any assistance! Lauren Brush

September 14th, 2008: Chris I found a couple mushrooms new to me that I’m having a little trouble making a positive ID on. One is some kind of bolete the pictures of it are a little dark so not sure if they will help. They were both found in second growth Douglas fir around SW Washington. The boletes were numerous with cracked patterns on the cap. The stems were a maroon brownish color tapering to white or yellow with yellow deep pores on the underside of the cap that bruised blue. I picked a few for spore prints and found they don’t keep well. They were mostly mush when I got them home. I also found a shaggy mane which was a first for me. The second one that is giving me trouble is a lobster I believe but it looks slightly different from the pictures I’ve seen. I know the lobster is a parasite on another mushroom, so do some just look different? Let me know what you think. Rich Schneider

Only one hen so far and I am monitoring it's growth. Good luck to all, Chris O.

September 17th, 2008: Hi, Last summer about this time I had these pop up in the garden in front of my home in Cumming, GA. It was after the soil in this garden had been disturbed to put in irrigation pipes and I had spread new cedar mulch down (not sure what the source was). In the past few weeks they have popped up again. I can usually smell them before I see them. They stink! I'm guessing they are poisonous. Thanks for your help to identify them. Cindy Michaels

The reason they stink Cindy, is because they are Stinkhorns! Not poisonous either! - Chris M

September 18th, 2008: Chris, I found this puffball in my back yard and it measures about 6" across. I tried to identify it and it looks like the sculptured puffball but according to the book these are only found in the western states in the mountains. What do you think it is? I've attached 3 pictures below of the same mushroom. Hope things are going well for you. Thanks, Jim Finley

September 18th, 2008: We checked out Mohican S.P. today and found some nice fall mushrooms: millions of aborted entolomas, a patch of blewits, a few chanterelles, many ringed honey mushrooms, oysters, and a couple of boletes. In the first photo you can see the un-aborted and aborted forms of the entoloma growing out of the same base. Our neighborhood is also filled with ringless honey mushrooms right now, but I don't care for their flavor as much as the ringed ones. -- hugh, Columbus, OH

September 19th, 2008:
Ok I admit it. I a probably to the point of obsessed. But I was walking
in the Chagrin River park and scanning the woods
for mushrooms because it's that time of year. I took a little path and walked
along a dry creekbed and a Hen-of-the-woods just
about jumped out at me. Then I saw her sisters all around the base of the same
gigantic old tree. This baby must be edging up on 10 lbs! I only had one bag
so I grabbed it and will go back for the others Saturday morning. I have been
excited about morels for years but I am beginning to think Fall is the better
time for mushrooms.
This only adds to my geekieness because i will because i will be talking about
mushrooms for about 6 months of the year rather than the usual 2.
You have to admit, it's a pretty huge mushroom. Yes! That's all one mushroom!

September 19th, 2008: Hello Chris: I watch a show on TV (Modern Marvels) about mushrooms. I went outside today while looking down found these huge mushrooms. The mushroom is 10 inches across. Found more even bigger. Brownish tan on top and the truck is white inside. Underneath has a great amount of pores and brownish tan in color. Strong smelling mushroom. What kind of mushroom is this? Can you eat this? I never knew that this is a big business. You guys must love mushrooms! Attach file pictures of the mushroom. Have a great day! Thank you, Andrea Small

September 20th, 2008: Chris I found some nice chicken mushrooms while elk hunting in SW Washington. I know people eat them but have not heard anything about how they are prepared. Do you have any good recipes for them? The weather has been pretty good here on the Westside of St. Helens. Not too hot or cold and starting to get some rain. You should have a good Foray at Saint Helens in a couple weeks. I’ll try to join you next year. Rich Schneider

September 21st, 2008: chris, i'm wondering whether all of these are Honeys. The ones on the right clearly, and I'm wondering if the mushrooms on the left are just more mature Honeys that have lost some of their gold color, and the caps have become inverted? Is this characteristic of Honeys? What about the two in the upper left? thanks, Mark

September 24th, 2008: Hey Chris.......thought you and David might have a clue on this one Its not an Oyster....as I am well versed in the local varieties here. Plus it did not smell like one and Oysters would have melted down or gotten mushy with the rain we have had recently. Its got a 20 inch wide cap...a 1 3/4" thick stipe....creamy yellow gills .Somewhat of a pimpely textured skin on the cap. It was past its prime for printing. I have shown the remaining un-picked caps on an oak tree at Truman Lake .......Missouri The boy knows his shrooms...but he is clueless about this one. Thanks ....Jason Lemaster

Lives one day and wilts, looks like a dead stinky part of an entral after it wilts. Unbelievable. Sounds like a common Stinkhorn, several are shown on this page above...-Chris M
September 27th, 2008: Hi guys! Even without a drop of rain, giant puffballs are exploding in and around the Indianapolis, IN area. We've seen 12 in the last couple days in neighborhood lawns and parks. We can only hope the hens will do the same. Chris O.

September 29th, 2008: We finally got some rain last night and, sure enough, a hen popped up at my earliest spot, a great big old oak in a local park. Hopefully we'll get some more rain soon -- hugh, Columbus, OH

September 29th, 2008: Hi Chris, well my secret hen spot in Columbus OH made up for last year's dissapointing production. I saw nearly 50 hens today! I would estimate seeing between 100-200 lbs! I took home 25 beauties, left 10 or so that were too old and massive, also left 10 or so babies to grow, plus dropped off 30+ lbs to Hugh and Nancy. All in a couple hours. Many more honey-holes were left unchecked. Also scored a few giant hericium. Will be back soon. Big, I mean really big oaks and maples were key in an isolated area. Good luck to all, Chris O.

September 30th, 2008: Chris, Found this puffball along a park trail in MI (Detroit area). 3.4 lbs. We found several more, although only 1-2 lbs each! We have been giving away all day to family and friends. The aborted entalomas, agaricus, and black staining polypores are everywhere…….

September 30th, 2008: Hi Chris, I found what I think is Laetiporus cincinnatus yesterday in open hardwood forest near Leesburg, VA. There was a dead oak tree nearby. Am I safe to chow down? Thanks, Bill

You are correct on the ID, enjoy! - Chris M
September 30th, 2008: Hi Chris, Just wanted you to know how much I enjoy your website. We found our first morels this past spring, just 40 ft from our back door and were able to correctly identify, thanks to you! Hopefully, there will be more next spring. We now have two dead elms, ( which is where they were discovered. I am attaching several pictures of some mushrooms that are in the exact same spot as the morels, at the foot of a dead elm stump. Any idea what they are? Poisonous? I would sure appreciate your feedback! Oh, we live in South Central Wisconsin, about 25 miles from the Illinois border. Thanks and have a wonderful day! Kindest Regards Deb

October 1st, 2008: Hi Chris, I know you are a morel man but thought you'd like to see the 2 coral mushrooms Dad and I found down on the farm 2 days ago. If you ever get to Southerm Missouri stop by. Steve

October 1st, 2008: I found two very nice fresh hens today at a local park by a giant white oak that produces pretty much every year. I haven't had a chance to check my best spot yet, but it's looking like a pretty darn good year for them so far. -- hugh, Columbus, OH

October 1st, 2008: Chris, I need help with a positive I.D. I found these on a rotted Maple log, in an area where I pick Brick Caps, but rarely before Thanksgiving, plus the caps are usually redder. The gills are gray on young, darker as they age. Spore print is brown/purple, taste is not bitter. Please advise. Recent rains have the forest full of fungus, Slippery Jacks, Hericeums, Shaggy Manes, Oysters, Aborted Ent. Numerous Giant Puffballs, Chickens, Hen of the Woods & many I do not pick including some beautiful Amanitas. Thanks, Ed Chesko

October 1st, 2008: ben, hen of the woods - general location = clarksburg wv, Growing Conditions = base of a large oak
October 2nd, 2008: debbie marzullo, possible chicken - general location = found these in my backyard growing on a tree stump. I live in Algonquin, Illinois and found this right after lots of rain. I think this is a chicken but it is not the usual orange or yellow. Very creamy and white underneath. Very spongy and fresh. Growing Conditions = Growing at the back of my lot under trees facing north on large tree stump.
October 2nd, 2008: deb d, not sure - general location = wisconsin, rock county, Growing Conditions = in grass, next to a dead elm, right where we had morels in the spring
October 2nd, 2008: Tzvi Grossman, hen-of-the-woods - general location = Sharon, MA, Additional Comments = I found these in a spot under an oak that produces hen-of-the-woods every year. The two that have fruited so far are unusually small - I would guess that together they total less than 1 1/2 pounds.
October 2nd, 2008: Hi can you please help me identify the mushrooms in the enclosed photos- they are a lot like the oyster(pleurotus ostreatus) which I pick and enjoy but were not growing on a stump or log but on debris on the ground- and unlike the oyster have a central stalk. A fast reply would be appreciated as they were picked several days ago and I probably need to dry or freeze them if they are edible and worth eating Thanks Mike Paradise

October 2nd, 2008: We found another five perfect, fresh hens today, two on a cut oak stump and one on a very, very dead oak. I was worried the dry weather of the last month would be a problem, but I guess it was wet enough earlier this year that they're doing well. -- hugh, Columbus, OH

October 3rd, 2008: Hi Chris. I went out and gathered just over 6 pounds of Hens today. Would have had more, but my basket wasn't large enough. There is at least this much more in one place. Also, I found these clustered mushrooms. They look like ringless Honey's, but wanted to get an id before chowing down. The odd thing is, they were growing in huge clumps all over the yard where I gathered them. Pounds and pounds of them...everywhere. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks. Drew in Pierpont. Maitake was gathered from around the base of a HUGE Maple. Northeast Ohio.

Yes, they are Ringless Honey Mushrooms, cook well! - Chris M
October 4th, 2008: Hi Chris. I hope your kiling it in the Pacific NW. Lord knows I've got way too many shrooms on my hand..10.2.08's find was a pleasant surprise. My freind Ramiro and I saw around 30+ giant Herecium coralloides. Some he spotted the other day at a local park in Indianapolis IN. A few were as big as beach balls and deliciously fresh. One flush on downed beech and one on downed maple. Took nearly 40 lbs and left even more, Oh yeah, more hens as well. What a year for wild gourmet mushrooms! Good luck to all. Chris O.

October 4th, 2008: hugh, hen of the woods - general location = central Ohio, Growing Conditions = at the base of big white oaks, Additional Comments = we found two more perfect hen of the woods today, one small and the other quite large but still in excellent condition.
October 4th, 2008: Hi Chris, First, I love your site! I watch for the morel finds until they move to north country (MN). Anyway, I recently found a nice group of mushrooms near my new home. It is located in the northern half of MN. Avon area to be more specific. I had to use my cell phone to take the pics as someone stole my digital camera. The mushroom in question were found sept. 28. Most of the mushroom in the patch were past prime and turning brown. I think they are Clitocybe nuda, I would just like confirmation from a mushroom expert before I chow down on unfamiliar mushrooms. The color of the stem/gills/cap are blue to purplish in color, they vary in size 2" to 5 or 6" across the cap. They are now drying, the spore print is a dark tan to brown, the mushrooms are loosing the blue color but is still present given a close look. I hope these pictures and description are enough. Thank you and hope to hear from you soon. Dan

October 5th, 2008: I have a great photo to share, its my first chicken mushroom. Taken today Oct 5th..southern oregon cascades. I only took a small amount 15 #, nothing in comparison to its size... I was not sure if this was in fact the chicken mushroom, I came home researched , and felt ok to cook it, and it was great ..awesome taste. what beauty in the color and shape. Melissa K
