They have a very short thick stem & shaped like a saddle, light tan w/ darker brownish spots on top and the bottom is spongey lookin.g Does anybody out there know if they are safe to eat. My 90 year old Dad said he thought they were, but he has not eaten any. HELP!! I would need a photo to give an ID!- Chris M

Today they were found in bunches. We found 111 yellows (72 in an area maybe 15 yards wide by 30 long, 29 around 1 Elm tree, 8 under another and just a couple others by themselves). Tomorrow may be a good day to call in sick to work!

May 2nd, 2005: J. Orr,  grey morel,  Morchella esculenta - general location: Eaton Rapids Michigan.Growing Conditions: "Ripe" Dead Elm "whips", with full bark on top of old RR grade growing out between limestone chunks.Additional Comments: Picked first 'shroomies of 05'. We had 3" of snow 1 week earlier & only added needed moisture for the 16 small gray morsels picked April 30.Chris: Is there really a difference between "grays & yellows", or is this just 2 colors/stages of the same Morchella esculenta?  I have found grays early in past years, left them alone and they turn yellow after a week or so.Please clarify. In the member areas, you will find a photo journal I did last year, a growth study, and this does clarify the old myth of two different species, as I proved it with pictures that Gray/ yellow= same shroom! The reason that I have them separated on the report form, is that it helps determine how far along the season is, as they can grow for up to 3 weeks from gray to yellow!-Chris M

May 2nd, 2005: Tony Ledogrey's and white's - general location: minnesota river valley, south of Eagan. Growing Conditions: Site which way burned last may. May 2nd, 2005: DJyellow morel - general location: Indiana, montgomery county. Growing Conditions: South side of a hill. Additional Comments: This is an odd season, we had high 80"s in the middle of april then freezing temps at the end. What was found was big and in groups, grays and yellows were very large. My belly is full and a nice batch dryed for later in the winter to enjoy. Happy shrooming.

May 3rd, 2005: dimargy, Sent this photo of Black Morels from Italy!

May 3rd, 2005: Charlie 4 Toulamne County, Ca B-ray reports 100 morels, grays and blacks (we think!) Under Pine, 4100' Check out the reddish hue of these guys! Anyone know what causes this (Chris? a little help?) Also what variety are these? Thanks! The species of Black Morels in the West, that grow under pines I personally don't believe is the same as the Black Morels in the East. Send a dried one into the The Morel Data Collection Project at MushroomExpert.Com, Dr. Carol Carter is doing a DNA Study on Morels. These may be even different from the Black Morels that are in fire burned areas of the West. Neat! - Chris M

Growing Conditions: We found 75 burnsite morels (2 lbs) in western Sonoma County, elev 1000'.  We also left well over a hundred that had rotted away or burned by the sun.  That forest must have been full 2 weeks ago.  The morels were growing in/around burned Madrone tree clusters.  The morels we found ranged in size from 1/2" to 5 1/2".  We are eating like kings tonight!

May 3rd, 2005: Teriyellow morel - general location: I found them in the mulch of my new house on the east bench of Utah Valley, in Utah county, Utah. Growing Conditions: The one mulch bed faces south west, and I didn't see any others anywhere else.  We have had record rain, 4" in April.  I'm going to water my mulch next season and see what happens. Additional Comments: I used to find them in the mulch beds of my college housing in Ashland Oregon and we would walk around the neighborhood picking them for dinners and awesome omelets.  I'm so excited to find them in Utah!

May 3rd, 2005: Thia,  grey morel - general location: I have found about 650 more yellow and gray morels since last time I posted - All within the last two weeks, all but 7 in the same spot. This is all in Centerville, OH. (Mongomery County) Growing Conditions: I don't know what type of tree it is, but they have vines hanging from them. The woods are very easy to walk - flat and not brushy. Additional Comments: Chris, can you give us better diretions to your study of gray morels turning into yellow morels? If this is true, how do you explain the fact that grays have thicker stalks/stems. They almost always have a thicker and tougher stalk than the yellows...atleast in my woods. My Morel Growth Study is located in the member areas, has its own "button" to click on. It took place last year over about a 3 week period of time, (the first time I took a picture, it was gray and 2" tall, and turned into a yellow at 7" tall after about 3 weeks. When they are young, of course they will be thicker, more condensed, and as they grow, the stem becomes thinner. The same thing happens with Black Morels, cery small diameter stem and thick head in the beginning, but let them grow, and the stem gets much bigger diameter and thinner. One of my members also did a Morel Growth Study with Black Morels a couple of years ago, and this also is in the member areas.- Chris M

May 3rd, 2005: Some very large Gyromitra carolina (False Morels) found a couple weeks ago by Craig

May 3rd, 2005: Jim, yellow morel - general location: Greene and Fountain Co. Indiana. Growing Conditions: Some growing along a low sandy area on the edge of a decent sized creek and the others on an East facing ridge in heavy leaf cover. Additional Comments: Found about 30 in Greene Co and 60 in Fountain Co. They most all were large very moist morels. Only found 3 or 4 that were just starting to mold. The cool temps have been a defininate bonus after the warm spell a couple of weeks ago.

May 3rd, 2005: Monica, black morel - general location: Found 2 on April 24th and 3 on April 30th, Newville Pennsylvania - small blacks, of course I still cooked this small find and hope to find more soon. Growing Conditions: Both finds were near rotted out trees, in the mountain area, on a slope facing South. Additional Comments: If anyone is intested in selling their finds, I am more than happy to buy and eat them.

May 4th, 2005: mark yellow morel - general location: Hickory pennsylvania. Growing Conditions: found 2 large yellow morels 4 small black morels 1 half free morel all under 1 very large ashe tree these are the first I have found this year.

May 4th, 2005: Jane & Scottyellow morel - general location: Illinois, Peoria County. Growing Conditions: Mostly elm, some oaks, some on a gentle slope down to a creek, others on the flatter area on top of the ridge. Additional Comments: Saturday Scott and I found only one morel, a ovely yellow about 4 inches high. It was growing sideways, probably knocked over when it was still young.
I saw a posting at MorelMania.com about a report concerning the State of Illinois not allowing mushroom hunting in state parks until after 1:00 pm. I thought that must be a hoax to keep me from hunting until all the mushrooms had already been picked. Then yesterday I was at the Mackinaw State Fish and Wildlife area. They had signs posted at every access point warning mushroom hunters and other visitorsthat there is no access to the area before 1:00 pm from April 11 - May 11 due to turkey hunting. On a 2 hour hunt this morning, Scott and I didn't see any turkey hunters, or turkeys for that matter. We did see 6 deer running through the woods. And we found 8 nice yellow morels, which I prepared for lunch in scrambled eggs. You can see photos of them at my photoblog:

May 4th, 2005: Chris, Can you ID this Yosemite fungus?? Thanks, Jack. Very interesting. This is not a mushroom, but a type of a plant similar to a Squawroot or something of that nature. -Chris M . Thanks for getting back to me so fast. I just found the answer and you are correct it is fungus like lacking in chlorophyl. The plant is called a snow plant. Here is the website with many examples. http://waynesword.palomar.edu/pljune97.htm. Thanks again, Chris! Jack.

May 4th, 2005: Another nice submitted photo of Grey Morels.

May 5th, 2005: NewbieVerpa?  - general location: Newbury, OH. Growing Conditions: Under mature Tulip Trees.
Additional Comments: Trying to post a picture of this mushroom to see if anyone can identify it.  Maybe it's a false morel?  Can anyone lend some insight? This Gyromitra Brunnea or similar. Avoid eating it.- Chris M

May 5th, 2005: hugh urbanyellow morel - general location: Licking Co., Ohio. Growing Conditions: mostly on warmer slopes around tulip-poplar, some around elms. Additional Comments: We had a very good day despite the cold weather -- 65 yellows and 1 half-free. Most of the yellows were small, but about 10 were good-sized. Most were around tulip-poplars, and only a few around elms, where we usually find them. This week-end could be the peak up here

May 5th, 2005:  Jeff W.,  grey morel - general location: Berks County PA. Found some on a south slope with a little bit of elavation,  Other's I found in a patch of woods lower in elevation; more at the lower elevation could be the temperature diffrence Additional Comments: It seem's to be just the begining of the season, as long as conditions are good I should be finding them for at least 3-4 weeks. Ye Haa!

May 5th, 2005: larry belau, other  not sure - general location: near a running creek, under maples and douglas fir 4-29-2005
Applegate-Ruch southern Oregon area Growing Conditions: where the creek had edded out an area about 15'x15, probably had good loam and they got deposited after a flood waiting for the right conditions. I would need to see a photo.- Chris M

May 5th, 2005: Blane Hillman,  grey morel - general location: extreme sw Michigan. Growing Conditions: Under dead elms in one of my old standby spots. Found about 19 good sized greys, still maturing into yellow morels. Still been too dry and cold for it to be real good here. Never found any black morels here this year, due mainly to dryness.

May 5th, 2005: Brian Bailey,  grey morel - general location: Jackson County Ohio. Growing Conditions: In the bottom hollars around elm trees. Additional Comments: First 4 found May 4th 2005

May 5th, 2005: Hi Chris -- Several of these mushrooms are growing in our mulch and native plant area by our house.  We live in the Minneapolis area.  I am hoping that one you'll be able to help us correctly identify the mushrooms.  If they are morels, how can we encourage growth? Thanks for your help.  I hope the picture is good enough.

You have Morels! Enjoy! - Chris M

May 5th, 2005: Gayleyellow morel - general location: We found them in the Montana, in the Rocky Mtns. near Glacier Park.
Growing Conditions: Found them mainly on side hills, underneath snow brush. They are just beginning to come up, but still, we picked a grocery sack full of yellow morels.  Warmer weather will really bring them up!

May 5th, 2005: Rob & Angie Dillon, found blacks, greys and yellows, about 50 total, St. Joseph County, Michigan.  Found scattered everywhere - a little too early yet for anything great.  Here's a picture - they were very fresh.  Thanks - love your site!

May 5th, 2005: Jim Johnsongrey morel - general location: Idaho Falls, Idaho (Southeastern Idaho) Growing Conditions: Scattered through cottonwoods on river bottoms. Mostly in sandy soil. Additional Comments: Picked 25 yellow and grey morels May 4th.  First ones I've found this year. Left many small young ones for picking later.  Looks like it might be a good morel season this year.  Does anyone have a handle on what morels need to grow?  Temperature/moisture/Sunlight?  Around here they seem to be tolerent of freezing or near freezing night time temperatures and cool days. We have had a lot of rain lately.

May 5th, 2005: hugh urbanyellow morel - general location: Licking Co., Ohio. Growing Conditions: on a sunny slope under elms and poplars. Additional Comments: Well, I finally hit a mother-load today -- 86 big yellows all in one patch around a few elms and poplars. It was a genuine religious experience. They were all big, up to 7 1/2 inches, fresh and completely bug free. I was surprised to see them so large, given all the cold weather, but it was a very sunny slope. This is shaping up to be a good year, despite the slow start.

May 5th, 2005: MindyElephants Ear - general location: Burlington,Iowa Geode State Park. Growing Conditions: Creek Beds Up to the Crest of the HillS,out in the open, before the woods.I used a compass and kept finding that most of them were always north to north west of the trees{ELMS} Additional Comments: I heard that you should use mesh bags cuz a shroom has 250,000 to 500,000 spores and the wind carries the spores and produces more and they have a turn  over every 5 years.so when I got home I took my bags out back inmy yard by some Elm trees where it stays moist and has a large area of green moss and shook out all the liile crumb pieces, so we will see what happes in the future.Brought home about 5 years ago 75-100Lbs. of mushrooms, little grays to 12-16 inch yellows. so far this year about 5lbs. But I have seen people bring out shrooms by the bag fulls, all of these shrooms from Geode State Park. This place is so huge just check out web site for this park.  Does any one know what the real name for elephants ears are called I think they are also called tree shrooms. This is the 1st year I have found them but I have seen them before and they are good eating and more delicate so put them in a bag by themselves to keep from breaking apart.Well Good Hunting ! and hope that the season isn't over yet. Anyone close to Burlington,Iowa let me know if you are still finding them I haven't went since Sunday May 1st and only found about a 1-2 lbs. Between 3 of us.Good Luck.

May 6th, 2005: Mike, grey morel - general location: Fulton Co., Ohio. Growing Conditions: Under a dead Elm tree. In an easy to walk woods. May 6th, 2005: It's been a good season here in Maryland.  If you look closely, you can see 22 morels in this picture.  Sometimes, they can be quite easy to find...  These grew in a weird clearing covered with live elms, poplars, black locust and box elders.  An area within about 50 yards of this spot produced about 150 morels in two days, which together weighed 4 lbs.  Despite limited time to hunt, about 10 hours total, I found 7 lbs of yellows this spring in and around central Maryland.

Additional Comments: We hunted long and hard today, but only came up with four yellows and one half-free. Two of the yellows were big, though -- about 6-7". They were at the base of an elm where we have found them every year for the last 4 years running, in almost exactly the same spot. This year we never would have seen them if we didn't know the tree -- the first was just barely peeking out from under a large rock at the base of the elm, but turned out to be huge once we pulled it out.

Additional Comments: We found about 55 black morels between Thursday May 5th and sunday May 8th, all but one in pine growth areas. For the most part they were all an inch or two with the exception of one 6-7 inch one which was big and fat. The area has been low on rain but the last 33 we found popped up since the small rain we got Friday night. We will be returning to the area in a few weeks to look for whites.

May 8th, 2005: Scott and Michieblack morel - general location: We found between 10 and 30lbs(didn't pay that much attention) on a three day trip to the east side of the cascades in Kittitas and Chelan County, in WA. Growing Conditions: We found them between 2000 and 4500ft under pine and fir and vine maple.  These things really do grow anywhere. Additional Comments: On our way out, we saw a woman picking them right next to the county road.  We did pretty good this weekend, however the very mild winter seems to be taking its toll in Washington.  The bugs (especially the worms) are getting to most of them right away.   We are drying most of our finds since there are so many bugs.  Even the ones that look fresh are not turning out to be bug free.  Despite the bugs we still enjoyed the weekend and hanging out with family.

Just about to give up this insane pasttime. Went out this evening found 10 greys. Mohawk River flood plains. Under dead elm. Small, biggest one being about 2". Picked them anyways. In a relatively open area, they got alot of sun. Same tree I found my first ones last year, but seven days later. Upstaters, get out there.

May 11th, 2005:

Dear Chris,
This is my first season really pursuing morels.  After diligently looking around "my spot" for weeks, I finally noticed all of these little mushrooms popping up under the leaves.  I've staked off about 35 of them, but as they're so small now 1-2", I feel like I'll have an easier time finding them as they grow.  I cut four and sliced them open to help verify that they are morels.  My concern is that they might be verpa bohemica because some of the pits are quite long, but after slicing them in half, it appears that they are connected to the stem right where they should be.  Are these morels in your opinion?  If so, would you let these little guys grow or would you cut them before the slugs get them?   Found in NE Ohio on the afternoon of May 9th, 2005 - under tulip trees.  Yellow.

These are Morchella deliciosa, and do not get very large. They are common under Poplars. Enjoy! - Chris M

May 11th, 2005: Alicia Fahlsing, black morel - general location: Hobart, IN - Lake County. Growing Conditions: Under an Ash tree near a wetland.

May 12th, 2005: Chris, A good sign in the Sierra foothills where morels are exploding! cheers and good hunting, Phil Brown
Berkeley, CA.

May 12th, 2005: hugh urbanyellow morel - general location: licking county. Ohio. Growing Conditions: under ash, elm and tulip poplar, mostly on slopes. Additional Comments: i thought the season was about over here, but my wife and I found 48 nice yellows today, and the friends we were hunting with found about the same number. They were surprisingly young and fresh, so there may be a few more days left in the season here.

May 13th, 2005: Billyyellow morel - general location: Bureau, IL  Growing Conditions: Some BIG yellows in the bottoms (lowlands)
Found at least six pounds on hillsides even in tall grasses that were holding in heat. We have a really long season this year. Additional Comments: We always heard to keep morels in a potato sack or similar.  That spreads spores and makes for a better next year.  Is this true? It couldn't hurt, and this is what I always use. -Chris M

May 13th, 2005: Gayle T.,  yellow morel - general location: Northern Montana, Rocky Mtns. near Glacier Park. Growing Conditions: Found mainly on the side hills, underneath snow brush. There is very little snow this year, so I believe that's why we found them as early as we did in this location.  I believe with some more hot weather, there will be plenty more!

May 13th, 2005: Hi Chris, I stumbled across your website when looking for info on morels.  Nice site by the way.  Anyway, the reason i e-mailed you is i thought you may be able to help me identify what i believe to be black morels I found in the mountains of Western NC. This is my first find so I am a bit hesitant to eat them immediately. The caps are brown and pitted and the stems hollow.  One weird thing though, on the inside of the hollow caps are many clusters of light brown dots, is this normal or are they old and starting to rot?  I attached a picture. Thanks for your help and happy hunting! Jesse

You definitely have Morels! Interesting looking, maybe a rarer species? Submit a sample to the DNA study! - Chris M

May 13th, 2005: Tim G, morel-other - general location: Between Front Royal and Luray, Virginia 39 pounds... Growing Conditions: Under Poplars, Ash, Oak, and Pines. From steep slopes, to ridge tops, to valleys. Additional Comments: 2 weeks of hunting produced 39 pounds of Morels. Black, white, yellow, grey, and half free. Most were large yellows. This was our top year in that region even though it was very cold. The first day of our trip we collected 1.5 pounds of black Morels in snow flurries and had frost 4 nights.

May 13th, 2005: Carl, grey morel - general location: Rockford, Michigan. Growing Conditions: under oaks un the leaves.Additional Comments: I only found three but they were damn tasty. I made a morel and egg sandwich.

May 14th, 2005:

Chris O. and Tim G. found a few late season yellows in Licking County, Ohio. Saw what looked to be a good location on a map, went there, and after about 2 hrs, spotted a shedding elm next to a stream and bam.

May 14th, 2005: Edward, yellow morel - general location: Minnesota-Plymouth.Growing Conditions: standing-dead Elm trees. Additional Comments: Found only small yellow Morels, might be two more weeks until they really get going. Plenty of rain, however, much too cold.

May 14th, 2005: hugh urban, yellow morel - general location: Licking Co., Ohio.Growing Conditions: on slopes under ash, elm and tulip-poplar.Additional Comments: We found another 117 yellows and 1 half-free today. Every day I think the season is over, and then we find another patch. Most were little, but about 10 were big -- 4 were huge, about 7". Also, more were around ash and tulip-poplar than elm this year. Anyway, this has been our best year ever by far.

May 14th, 2005: Ivan Royyellow morel - general location: Ottawa,ON,Canada.--dead elm. Growing Conditions: rocky ground in jack pine, prickly ash ,hawthorn --scrub land with dead elm interspersed. Additional Comments: morels were grey, beige, & white --too small to pick 200+??

May 15th, 2005: Melissa Archibald, morel-other - general location: Temperance, Michigan Monroe County.Growing Conditions: They are growing in my flower beds. We live next to a creek if that helps. Additional Comments: I was really shocked to find them. I had just looked at my tulips one day and within just a few days my son and I noticed the beds were filled with mushrooms. My mother gets them every year in her yard so she came over to verify they were morel.

May 15th, 2005: wildmushroom, morel-other - general location: Wisconsin.Growing Conditions: hit motherload today 134 under one elm tree,  south hills total for day 260+  mostly whites and a few greys, weather has been cold and raining but never stops me yesterdays high was 49 I think

May 15th, 2005: Scott P, black morel - general location: there were 6 of us and we found about 30lbs of morels in our usual spots on the eastside of the Washington Cascades from 3500 to 4500ft.  the way things are shaping up the season could last three more weeks easily. Growing Conditions: found in dense fir, under ponderosa pine and in old clearcuts.

May 15th, 2005: hugh urbanyellow morel - general location: licking co., ohio.Growing Conditions: under ash, elm, tulip-poplar on slopes. Additional Comments: We found 36 small yellows today -- only two or three of them were decent-sized. Most were in okay shape, but several were mushy and buggy. I think the season is pretty much done in this zone. The interesting thing about this year is that about 80% of our finds were around ash and tulip-poplar, rather than elms where we usually find them. They were on the whole smaller, but also more numerous than previous years.

May 15th, 2005: Other Photo Submissions...........

May 16th, 2005: Hi Fellow Mushroomers, Here is a picture of the first morel mushroom we have found down here in Monroe, Utah. It's a good thing we picked it when we did, because the two smaller ones in the picture never did grow. They were dried up the next day when we went back up to the canyon to see if they were any bigger. I got a report from one of my sons. He found white morels in Provo Canyon today. He said there were about 20 of them and they were in great shape. We have reports from some friends in our area that found both white & black ones in Central Utah. It's good to know Morels grow out here in the arid country of good old Utah. Charlie & Linda Irons.

May 18th, 2005:

Been mushrooms hunting for a long time and have found alot of wierd ones. But never seen any like this. I've heard of whites before but could never find a picture. Then I stumbled onto a nice patch of these. About 65. Took a pic of the nicest ones. They looked so neat in the sun. Bright white. Any info you may have on these please let me know. Some may look a little tan, but they aren't. Please let me know what you think. Thanks! I have seen them look like this before, and it may be caused by a specific weather pattern in a particular spring. I am not sure. I also found some even whiter ones under a dead elm years ago, let them grow for two weeks, they never did turn tan or yellow, stayed white, and I call this species Morchella vulgaris.- Chris M

May 18th, 2005: Andrea, black morel - general location: Gallatin County, Montana. Growing Conditions:  Found about 25 of them along the river in the grass and under fallen cottonwood trees. Also in the Mountains along the quaking aspen trees.

May 18th, 2005: Chris, I found some mushrooms in the backyard and I thought they are morel mushrooms.  So I found your site and thought I would send you these photos to see if you could confirm this identification.  Backyard area they were found in, is shaded and were we just removed 22 dead White Ash trees.  The Emerald Ash Borer killed all of the trees.  Stem is hollow and so is inside
of cap
.  Ants seem to like being in them.  And that is about all I know. Let me know if you need more information.  I will see what I can do. Thank you, Matt, Troy, Michigan

You have Morels! Morchella esculenta! Enjoy! - Chris M

May 18th, 2005: CHRISTINE HACKETT, black morel - general location: I LIVE IN ANGUS, ONTARIO, CANADA. EVERY YEAR ME AND MY MOTHER GO OUT AND LOOK FOR MORELS ON THE SIDES OF ROADS AND ON PEOPLES LAWNS, ETC. EVERY YEAR WE WALK AWAY WITH AT LEAST A GROCERY BAG FULL. THEY VARY FROM YELLOW, GRAY AND BLACK. Growing Conditions: ON SIDES OF ROADS IN GULLY'S UNDER HARDWOOD TREES, SOME TIMES IN THE GRAVEL ON THE SIDES OF THE ROADS, SOMETIMES UNDER PINE TREES ON PEOPLES FRONT LAWNS. May 18th, 2005: youper,: black morel - general location: UP of michigan, delta county. Growing Conditions: picked in mixed hardwoods ash-maple. 19 doz for the afternoon

May 18th, 2005: Glen Malliet, burnsite morel - general location: California, El Dorado NF, Amador Co. Growing Conditions: Growing under burnt conifer/oak forest at about 4,500-5,200 ft ele. Additional Comments: Found heaps and heaps of fine bug free morels(mostly "blacks"). I collected a large shopping bag full in about 3 hours and within 15 minute walk from a paved road, despite numerous fungiphiles that were in the area (with 16,000 acres in the fall 2004 burn, no worry about competition).  Recent and ongoing rains, and many young srooms hold promise that the flush shall continue for the next two weeks or more. Best collecting I have had since 1998 when my season started with collecting 7# of yellows in early March near (and under) my house at 1,700 ft ele. in Calaveras Co and continued to find lots of Blacks and Blonds in burns at higher and higher elevation, ending at 7,000 feet in late June.

May 18th, 2005: Mattblack morel - general location: North metro of Minneapolis, MN. Growing Conditions: Recently wooded area.  Under dead elms and around elm stumps. Additional Comments: FINALLY!  Very small and very hard to see but at least they're out there.

May 19th, 2005: hugh urban, yellow morel - general location: licking co., ohio. Growing Conditions: under ash, tulip-poplar and elms on slopes. Additional Comments: Wow, I thought the season was over, but we went out for one last look and came out with 220 yellows. Most were small, many a bit old, but about 50 were nice, big and in good shape. It's been a really weird year -- about 10 days later than usual, but very productive, at least in central Ohio. Also, the ash and tulip-poplars have been producing lots and lots of small yellows this year. The big yellows still seem to come around elms, but we're finding scads of the little  ones especially around ash. Also we've found lots in unexpected places, like with lots of conifers around.

May 19th, 2005: youper, black morel - general location: UP of michigan, delta county, state land. Growing Conditions: first time i`v been to this part of the delta county & walked 2 miles in mixed hardwoods & found 2 doz. most were med. size.rain tonight might bring on some new mushrooms.

Additional Comments: Wow I never thought I could find this many morels in 3 days i found 120 pounds.  The first day I went out was on May 2nd, the second day was on may 9th and the last day I went was on may 14th.  It took me days to dry them all. Goin' out for more soon.

May 19th, 2005: Sue & Bobyellow morel - general location: Plymouth Township, Michigan - 5/18/05 Found Very First Morel, about a 6" Yellow, and 3 other nice size yellows and a couple of medium sized greys. Growing Conditions:  All Under hardwoods and brush. Many Maple and Apple Trees in area. Additional Comments: What a Rush! Can't wait to EAT Them!

May 19th, 2005: Hi Chris, Just a note to let you know that shrooming in Wisconsin is less than it could be this year. I think the early dry weather conditions perhaps put a bit of a damper on things. Or, possibly the past two years have us spoiled. They were both such bumper years. I've been finding a couple dozen at a time at the most. Yesterday I found a few of the big yellows. They usually come later in the season, but other people tell me that they are still finding inch high little greys which are usually in the beginning. Anyhow, We'll take what we get. How did the Knoxville Foray go? Amy Tisdale, Waupun Wisconsin

May 20th, 2005: Sheri Rogersyellow morel - general location: Frenchtown, Montana. Growing Conditions: Last years burn sites (on our property) along side the creek sides and in the wetter part of our horse pasture. Mostly around the tree root areas and where other types of mushrooms were found growing. Today I counted 5 different types of mushrooms including morrells.

May 20th, 2005: dustin bowles,: morel-other - general location: bear creek alaska. Growing Conditions: in decaying matter under large cottinwood stands along creek. Additional Comments: mmmmmmmm these babys are delicious with some fresh caught alaskan halibut and a huge bowl of kind herb

May 21st, 2005: Kim, yellow morel - general location: Chicago Illinois, Growing Conditions: In an urban lawn, about a mile from Lake Michigan, about 4 blocks from Wrigley Field.

May 21st, 2005: hugh urban yellow morel - general location: central ohio. Growing Conditions: under elms and ash, higher ground,
Additional Comments: Much to my surprise, we are still  finding nice yellows in central Ohio. Despite a pounding rain last night, we found 46 yellows today, mostly around elms, a few around ash; about half were small, the rest decent-sized. It's been an unusually cool spring here, which is probably why the season is lasting a bit longer than I would normally expect

May 21st, 2005: youperblack morel - general location: UP of michigan 10 doz. black morels. Growing Conditions: mixed hardwoods

May 21st, 2005: Cade,  general location: I am from LaCrosse Wisconsin.  Additional Comments: I havent found any of these black morels but what do i look for chris when i am looking for black morels? do they grow in different conditions or not even in my areA? They will come up 1-2 weeks before the grays and yellows. I have found them right in the same locations as Yellows, but normally under Poplars and Red Oaks in the East. In the member areas, there is extensive info on this.- Chris M

May 21st, 2005:  Cade Laufenbergyellow morel - general location: LaCrosse Wisconsin. Growing Conditions: Creek bottoms under a couple nice dead elms, Additional Comments: I found 9 nice morels today under a couple nice elms in the near by creek bottoms.

May 21st, 2005: Dave Lewis Clavicorona pyxidata: These were found in Westel, TN 5-20-05.  These are a great edible, but somewhat peppery.  They are one of a few of the coral mushrooms that grow directly on wood.  Common name: Crown Tipped Coral.  from spring till fall on well decayed wood.  I like them sauteed in butter with onion.

May 21st, 2005: Hi Chris,  I don't know if your morel season has been as good down south as it has been here, but man, despite a late start, this has been the best year we've had in my seven years of living in Ohio. Here are a few pics from recent finds -- hugh, ,  yellow morel  - general location: central ohio, Growing Conditions: on slopes around ash and elm. Additional Comments: We went out one last time today and found over 60 small yellows, but most were pretty ratty. Maybe 10 good ones; the rest I'm drying for later. Damn good year though.

May 21st, 2005: a friend of mine found this huge mushroom in boliver missouri around may 19th  we are wondering what type of mushroom it is and if it can be eaten  he says that it ways approximatly 6 pounds  he found it in the timber by itself  it was not growing on a log it was in the dirt your help in identifying this mushroom will be greatly appreciated thank you, jennifer jenkins, dewitt missouri

No doubt about it, that's a Sulphur Shelf, probably Laetiporus cincinnatus if it is white on the bottom.  It looks like it may be a little past prime, but trim along  for an inch or so back from edge. boil in chicken broth, let cool, roll in flour, fry in corn oil and a glass of ice cold butter milk makes for some mighty fine eating.

May 21st, 2005: basscatcher, here are some mushrooms that i found today. Please post them on the site! thanks

May 21st, 2005: Johngrey morel - general location: Point Beach State Park, Two Rivers , Wisconsin. Growing Conditions: This morel was found by my daughter, it was her FIRST morel find ever!!! May 22nd, 2005: Cott, Well, I made one last late season jaunt and found a couple large fresh yellows. This was a new spot in Licking County Ohio and they were under large ash and elms that barely lost any bark. Take a look at these monsters that were too far gone.

May 22nd, 2005: Lisa Hodge yellow morel - general location: I found one large yellow Morel in my neighbors yard.  First one ever!  I have been looking on the internet and it is exactly like the ones shown.  Hollow, same shape and texture and top/stem are all one piece. People around here find them by the dozens in the woods. Black River Falls, Wisconsin. Growing Conditions: along the fenceline of my neighbors yard.

May 22nd, 2005: Mike in Northwest Ohio, Grey and Yellow morels, Found 5 greys back on the 10th of May. One grey was 4 1/2" and the rest were about 2".  Then found a dozen large (5" to 8") yellow morels on the 21st.  I sent along a picture.  Some were found around a dead elm and others were just out in the open by themselves.   I also found some Clavicorona pyxidatas but did not pick them because I wasn't sure if they were edible until I got back to check them out.

May 22nd, 2005: Melany Kahn, black morel ,  general location: Halifax, VT. Growing Conditions:  on an overgrown path leading to some woods filled with a variety of wood including ash. May 23rd, 2005: hugh urban, chicken mushroom - general location: columbus, OH. Growing Conditions: on dead wood beside an open field. Additional Comments: We were walking our dogs and stumbled upon a very large flush of chicken mushroom today, which surprised the heck out of me since I've never seen it here before late June or July. It's normally a late summer mushroom here. Weird. But I'm not complaining. It's one of my favorites, and it was in beautiful shape.

May 24th, 2005: I found this mushroom behind our house.  I live in the Black Hills of South Dakota.  We built our log cabin in a aspen and birch forest.  I was told by mushroom hunters that it is an excellent place for morel mushrooms.  Is that what it is.  It wasn't by a stump or anything it was actually right next to the north side of our foundation.  Please let me know if it is a morel.  I will be a mushroom hunter for life if it is.  Thank you so much for your help. Where we didn't find any but a scattered few about 10 days ago, now I'm finding bags of large yellows in clumps of 5 to 15 in a group. Easy to gather a nice bag in about 30 minutes of easy hunting.

May 27th, 2005: Massive morel is formidable fungus, EDGEWOOD, Iowa (AP) -- A morel mushroom found near a dead elm in northeast Iowa last weekend will be preserved for posterity. Daryl Baumgartner, 34, said his 13-inch "trophy" mushroom weighed in at 1 pound, 2 ounces.

May 28th, 2005: Dave Lewis, found Pluteus flavofuligineus, I just found this this afternoon and ate it, I suspect it non-poisonous, but all the literature I can find says unknown.  Well, it won't be for long LOL.  It has a lot better taste and texture than P. cervinus.  It was found in Westel, TN on rotten hickory 5-27-05.

May 29th, 2005: bassmycleaHere is a pic of a whopper I found near Northfield, MN 5-25-05. It was under a picture perfect dying elm that had the speckle marks on it. There was about 30 total under the tree. I am attaching a pic of the big one and a pic of the whole cluster found around the tree. Thanks for posting all the great pics on your site.

May 30th, 2005: Hello, My name is Trudy.  I found these Mushrooms on my property in Crown Point, NY in the Adirondacks this weekend.  One was under an old apple tree and the darker ones I found up in the woods in an open area that had been logged near a stump. Are they Morels? I have never hunted mushrooms but would like to learn more. Thanks,  Trudy

Yellow Morel! Enjoy! Most likely the one that was found under the Apple Tree, right?

These are Gyromitra esculenta, and could be very poisonous to some people and you need to avoid these. They contain similar chemicals as rocket fuel! (MMH)- Chris M

One area was great, a small island in the stream held a third of todays harvest, all 5-7 inches on the island. Kids in a candy store. Almost all found in close proximity to large cottonwoods, same as when we were kids along the Columbia River 20 years ago. Mostly in heavy underbrush, Devils Club, in dampest areas of woods, South of Anchorage.

May 31st, 2005: Alain, Hi, I just spent 1.5 hours in the area of Orangeville, Ontario and found 40 black caps under cedars. They were not there last week, so the rain must have helped, though they are late this year.

June 2nd, 2005: Sylvia Millsblack morel - general location: Chena Hot Springs Road, interior Alaska on May 29.Growing Conditions: Under birch trees in area that burned in 2002, ground was pretty dry, south facing slope. Additional Comments: The season here is just starting, should go til mid June if we get good rain. While the 'shrooms are fairly docile, the bear population makes it necessary to carry a gun and keep an eye on more than just the ground.

June 2nd, 2005: tvsmash, burnsite morel - general location: Central Yukon Territory, Canada. Growing Conditions: I found 15 pounds of black morels with a few greys in a burn area on a hillside at 1800 feet. Very hot burn with all ground cover burned away and standing fire killed pines. June 3rd, 2005: Dave , Well, I thought that the morels here in NE PA would be over by the end of May. But, while out for a hike last Wednesday (6/1) my wife spotted two perfectly fresh giant yellows growing by a trail. She reports that the woods were mostly maple but that an ash tree grew about 6 feet down an embankment from where the morels were. The area is a bit higher-up and cooler than most of my known local spots. I have never found a morel in this particular area, butI'm hoping to get a few hours to check it out today. Maybe when morels do occur in this area they do so later than I would typically check. Of course the cool weather that we have had during may probably has something to do with the lateness. In one of his field guides, author David Fischer relates a story about finding giant yellows in June in NYS in beech/maple woods during a Spring when few other morels fruited. This May there virtually no yellow morels in our woods (some in the orchards). The orchard yellows seem to be done fruiting, as last time I checked my two favorite orchards (about a week ago), there were none.

June 4th, 2005: Chris M found Tremella fuciformis  in Central Georgia.

June 4th, 2005: Scott, Cantharellus minor - general location: Mississippi, Lauderdale County. Growing Conditions: Damp shady creek bank. Additional Comments: Sorry, no pics. Didn't have my camera with me this time.

June 5th, 2005: Lots of rain at the right time and a little sun has supplied us with over 400 morels this season. Last year we only found about 70. I am going out again tomorrow.  It is so addicting, I love it! Andrea From SW Montana. I also found some of these oyster mushrooms I think that is what they are. When I cut into them I saw some tiny worms throughout the whole cluster. I heard they are very good and I am disappointed I couldn't try them. next time.

June 5th, 2005: Hi,  I came across your site while trying to research whether the mushrooms growing under the deck in my backyard are real or false morels. We live in Connecticut and would think it rare for this variety to grow here. I've attached a couple of photos, one taken outside and the other inside after I cut the mushroom in half. Any help would be appreciated. -Mary

You have real Morels there! Enjoy them! -Chris M

June 5th, 2005: Sharon S Bissell, Natural Morel - general location: Find Date: June 4,2005 I found the two that you see in the hand by a light pole along the power line. I took picture of one of them before I picked it.  The others were in the natural forest across the road from my house. I found six in less than 15 seconds apart.  I always try to take picture before picking .Growing Conditions: Natural forest growth. Additional Comments: These mushrooms are still small. This is because of the cool nihgts we are still having I'm told. The other mushroom are what some pickers found up the taylor highway in alaska.

June 6th, 2005: joe,  What are these?  They smell!!! These mushrooms keep popping up all over the place in our front yard. they have a very strong odor so we keep removing them. they keep coming back and we can't get rid of them. are they morels???   thanks!

This is Phallus revenelii. A stinkhorn! - Chris M

June 6th, 2005: Hi Chris, Thanks for the fast response and info. Cool picts on your site. Here are some other mushrooms we have growing in the yard. Was wondering if they were edible. How about a recipe forum? I've never cooked with morels before. Would you recommend drying them? Take care, Mary

These are probably an Agaricus species, too far gone to eat. These would  be similar to a Portabella Mushroom. I have a recipe forum in the member areas. Drying morels is the best way to preserve them for future use. - Chris M

June 7th, 2005: woofer,  June Morels in the snow,  went out on sunday and just got snowed on hard, it was weird, snowing so hard you couldnt see on one side of the hill, then we go twenty miles away at the same elevation, and it looked like it never even rained at all. oh well, here are my newest pics- Oregon.

June 8th, 2005: Uff Dah|, Was not really looking for morels, just out for a walk. Used to find them down by Winona as a kid.
While walking along a trail near
Minnehaha falls today I found a monster. 13" tall. From past experience I looked everywhere in the vicinity. Found no more. Maybe someone had cleaned up before us. Anyhow, this mushroom was beautiful. From experience years ago I would say it came up in the last week. In a few places the outer edges were a bit crusty, but I cut those off and sauteed it with a pork chop tonight. It was delicious!!! Do morels grow everywhere in Mn. to some extent? Or was this a freak of nature. Never thought you could find em in town. A Norwegian that grew up on pickled northern and Morels.

This one came a bit earlier than previous years.  We also saw some xerula megalospora and quite a lot of tree ears (tree ears aren't bad in a stir-fry, actually. They love them in China, I hear)

My wife grew up eating morels all the time and has been bugging me to go and look for them since we had alot of fires in Alaska this year. I had never seen or tasted a morel so I started doing my homework. We left Sunday morning and headed to the burned areas. I will never forget what I saw when I arrived. Literally a carpet of morels. We spent about 6 hrs picking over a area no bigger than 100ft X 100ft. Besides a sore back, we ended up with 6 and a half 5-gal buckets full. Mixture of greys, blacks, and yellows. Needless to say I am hooked.
