As pretty as these mushrooms are, they are Gyromitra, a false Morel, and do contain toxins (MMH) which is an ingredient in rocket fuel! I cannot recommend eating these, although many people do. Please be careful, as many reports yearly come in of stomach upset, and I believe even one fatality! -Chris M

April 3rd, 2007: Hi Chris,  I stumbled onto your site via Google search. Very fun & interesting.  We're in NW Oklahoma (Alva) & found our first morel in OKC the 23rd of March, but I wasn't aware of your first morel of 2007 contest until afterward. So I thought I'd send a picture of our find yesterday. We dumped them onto a sheet & had my niece sit along side for a volume/size comparison to show the multitude of morels we found . Maybe 4-5 gallons. We've had a very wet Spring this year after several years of drought. Must be perfect growing for them. Enjoy the season & good hunting. Dudley & Jeanne Winn Alva, OK 73717

In that particular area in our yard in 2002, we had a 30 foot Autumn maple which was blown over by a storm.  We had the stump ground, but since that time, we always have mushrooms in the yard growing in that area.  However, this is the first time to see this type. April 7th, 2007: Hi, I  found some morels outside my front door, right here in San Diego .  I live inland about 20 miles.  They were growing right out of the soil, in a shady area of my flower garden.  It is fairly moist, with some rotted leaves for ground cover.  They look very simlar to the morels that I remember eating as a kid in Southern Minnesota .  According to the pictures on your websight, they look to be Morchella Rufobrunnea variety. They don’t smell sweet, however.  The trunks have very little smell, and the caps smell a bit like dirty dishwater. Are they okay to eat?  Are there any known mushrooms which look like these that are poisonous? Hanns Lindberg, I would have to see a photo to tell for sure, but it sounds like a Landscape Morel, and as long as they are still fresh, they should be good to eat. - Chris M

Justin, when you pick your Morels, please use a knife, or pinch them off, do not pull up out of the ground, this damages the mycellium plant. April 8th, 2007: SHROOMSTER"  JOHNBOY  SOUTH EAST MARION IL "NEWDENNISON" WILLIAMSON COUNTY in little  SOUTHERN IL  took the neighbor down the road "lady on the left " Jamie "lady on the right"my wife Angie   Friday  to my honey hole and hit the jackpot on the whites and a few gray some of these bigger ones look like they had been up for a few days and with the cold temps. and snow hitting us in the face on the Honda atv's and the carhartt,s  on, we was  headed to the woods temp, was  33 degrees  for the high of the day and the low for the early morning on the 7th of April is forecasted for the low  to mid 20's I thought we would find a few that had popped over the last two weeks of march when the temps was 83 85 88  but I had no idea what I was in for  we found  most of these along  a big stretch of a old abandoned rail road bed  among some very huge ash trees I let the lady's take all the fame they are more pretty to look at also I have to add gratitude to my son Tyler he is 15 going on 16 and did not want in the picture but he hunted another spot in Shawnee national forest down by little grassy lake and brought home  a lot of halfree morels they have all fruited at the same time here in SOUTHERN IL hope the cold temps and freeze warnings don't end the season  on a early note what do you think Chris  could you give me some insight???? thanks for the posting ANGIE JAMIE TYLER and the SHROOMSTER

The hard freeze will probably "frost-bite" the morels that are exposed, but when it warms back up, more new ones may begin to fruit.- Chris M

April 8th, 2007: Thom Lackeyyellow morel - general location = At the Mined Land Wildlife area NE of Columbus, KS. Along a trail running beside one of the strip Pits. Found 10 about 3 to 4 inchs tall. Surprized that they where still good nights been dropping way below freezing here after a warm spell.  I'm not sure as to how badly the cold snap will affect further production, but the ones I found were doing very well still considering the low night temps. Growing Conditions = On top of the ridge near downed Elm, and then on the West side hill in a burned area. Ground was good and moist and the surrounding vegetation had protected them from the cold snap.  Didn't find anymore, on searching further North, the Bottom lands apeared to be too Wet. Will try again at the creek bottoms East of town tomorrow, I'm sure the Pits have plenty more but the terrain is just to rough for my old bones.

April 12th, 2007: This photo has the bark morel, five inch temperature probe and Idaho Statesman Newspaper, 1:00 pm Thursday April 12th morel found.
I had done temperature checks on Monday April 9th and the soil was averaging 57 degrees at 5" deep. Tuesday morning temperatures were quite cold and Wednesday morning it was only a little above freezing. I skipped Tuesday and Wednesday and finally checked the patch again today April 12th. One bark morel with frost-top, I call it that when a morel has been frost bitten. The name comes from MAGREW's Frost Top in Boise [it's gone now] where you could get the best home made rootbeer in the West. The morning of April 10th the air temperatures got below freezing which is when this morel would have been frost bit. Therefore I am going to assume that it flushed sometime after I checked the patch on Monday afternoon and before the early morning hours of Tuesday because Tuesday morning temperatures were in the high 20's. John

April 13th, 2007: Hi Chris, 4/13/07 Report from Portland, OR: Found enough in a couple hours to keep thing interesting. April 13th, 2007: Cydney black morel - general location = in my yard next to stepping stones, in a wooded area, Hollywood Hills area above wineries in Woodinville, WA
Additional Comments = can I send picture to confirm variety? Which morel are these, gray, black?  They are growing in twos along these stepping stones; there are four sets of two at this moment.  The tallest is 7.5 inches.  Are these edible?  I live on Hollywood Hill, in the hills above the wineries in Woodinville, WA (a suburb of Seattle, east side of Lake Washington).  The other sets not photographed have been partially eaten, perhaps by wild rabbits or mountain beavers in my yard or slugs or something else?  I live in an older forested area with mature cedar trees about 85 feet tall, and Gold Creek runs on my property, as well as regular home type landscaping.  Thanks.  Cydney

These are Black Morels, look very fresh, you are lucky! - Chris M

Additional Comments = We started hunting this year in late march because of the blooming trees.  We go most of the time in Mid-April.  My question is this.  It has cooled off again and began raining alot.  Will the mushrooms come out again if it warms back up or is finding them a one time span of about two weeks. Thanks. This is a common question, I think some may re-fruit. It will be interesting to find out! keep in touch! -Chris M

April 13th, 2007: Lukegrey morel - general location = Kansas, Douglas county, Growing Conditions = , off the wakarusa river on an east facing slope just to the southeast of dead elm trees wrapped in vines. April 14th, 2007: Dear Chris- What a great site you have.  I found it on google.  I'm sorry I haven't joined yet, but I owe taxes this year and my wife says I have to pay them first.   so I understand completely if I don't hear from you or see my lovely photo on your site.  the attached picture was taken in my back yard in Fairfax CA on Apr 14th.   It looks sort of morel-like, but nothing like the ones I used to pick with my dad up in Canada.  is it possibly a semilibera?   I looked it up in a big mushroom book I inherited from my dad but didn't learn much, as most of the words used
to describe it aren't even in the dictionary.  like "ochreous".   Took me all morning to find out it meant "yellow."   I just want to know if
we can eat it.   Please accept as a small token of my appreciation the clever subject line created here: "killer, thriller, or filler" is yours to use as you wish. many thanks. Rob Darcy

You have a "True" Morel here! You are lucky, this is a choice edible! Enjoy! -Chris M

April 15th, 2007: I found about 20 yellow morels today, in Carbondale, IL.  Are morels that have a yellowish stem too old to eat?  I have fresh ones as well so I don't mind throwing them out if they're too old. thanks-Bart. Darker stem sometimes is just more mature. If the mushroom does not have a foul oder, or is soggy, then it is probably fine to eat.- Chris M

April 15th, 2007: Garrett and Laurie Stock, black morel - general location = Martinsburg, PA Blair County, Growing Conditions = around wild cherry, fairly rocky, Additional Comments = We found 12 today. This is our first find of the year. Weather isn't to good here yet. Cold and rainy. Getting ready to get a little snow. Patiently waiting for warmer weather.

April 15th, 2007: This is bart from So. IL, Here are the pictures of those frostbitten morels.  I'm not sure if they are actually "frostbitten" but I do know that after a couple days of the freezing temperatures I found 50 dead-looking yellow morels under an american elm, when just five days earlier I found fifty fresh ones, under a dead american elm, about 200 ft. away.  They may not be frostbitten but I do think they died from the cold temperatures that swept in.  All the ones I saw during the coldfront were small and had red to reddish-black tops.  But now that the night temperatures have got above freezing I am seeing morels that popped up the previous night that are fine, I found about ten of those today.  I'm also
seeing lot's of morels that have yellow stems but are too small to have really spoiled from old age.  And today I saw two deadly
galerina's today. The pictures attached are the ones I picked today 4/14/07,  I left more out there that were in much worse shape (brown tops and really yellow stems) that were out there longer, and they were the same size as these. Bart

April 16th, 2007: I found 51 yellow morels on April 3 in Carbondale, IL.  They were under a big dead American Elm.  You can use this picture on your website if you want. Bart D.

April 16th, 2007: Angela, yellow morel - general location = Washington, San Juan Island, Growing Conditions = Under madrona's

April 16th, 2007: Portland April 14, Explored our indicator spots in the North Cascade range at ~ 2500 ft. Found some baby Morels and a couple mature specimens. We left these babys to document rate of growth, will back n several days. Holehog

April 16th, 2007: John, whites and greys - general location = Clark County, Ohio, Growing Conditions = Dead elm trees growing on side of creek bed. Additional Comments = Found 86 total, 10 in one patch and 76 in the second patch!  Hunted in the cold rain but it was worth it.  We have plenty of moisture here but need more warm sunny days.

April 16th, 2007: I found 86 total, 10 in one patch and the remaining 76 in a second patch!  They seem to be blonde morels, as well as a very light grey variety.  Growing conditions were around dead elm trees growing on the slopes of a creek bed.  Picked them in Clark County, Ohio.  We have plenty of moisture here but with a few warm and sunny days we should be loaded with them.

April 16th, 2007: Joy M.,  yellow morel - general location = Northwest Arkansas, Growing Conditions = Around Sycamore trees
Additional Comments = I was wondering about the little jumping bugs you always seem to find in them. How do you kill them all without ruining the shrooms? Also you said to put them in a brown paper bag for up to 2 weeks, no soaking? (How can you wait that long to eat them? YUMM) I have tried soaking in salt water to kill the bugs. My husband says the itching is my imagination. I found them (28) the last week in March before the freeze. Hope to find more now that it is warming up.

April 16th, 2007: Adriangrey morel - general location = burlington Wv. April 16th, 2007: Jim Farmergrey morel - general location = Kentucky Foray, Growing Conditions = cold hills of west ky, Additional Comments = I just wanted to send a quick note to all who attended the ky foray. It was a great pleasure to meet each and every one of you. I guess the weather was not exactly cooperative but coming together with other hunters was an awesome experience for me. I hope that you would consider returning ky for another foray, hopefully in a better season so that everyone can take some morels with them. I surely wish we would have found more than the 125 or so that we found but mother nature was a lil outta sorts.  I will keep posted as to the new morels that might appear within the next week or so. Thanks Chris you are a tribute to the mushroom hunting experience. I hope that we may have many more hunts.    your friend Jim Farmer

April 16th, 2007: tony, black morel - general location = Nelson Co.,Va. Growing Conditions = apple orchard Additional Comments = Juct starting to find them here. Plenty of rain,so it looks promising.

April 17th, 2007: found in warrick county indiana along with a lot more ,     southern in hunter

Please, do not pull up the Morels! Pinch them off above the ground, or use a knife and slice them off. What you are doing is exactly the same thing as breaking a branch off of an Apple Tree to pick the Apple. You damage the underground plant of the Morel by pulling them up. You keep this practice up, and in a couple of years you will not have Morels in that spot any longer! Besides, why do you want to bring home all of that dirt anyway?- Chris M

April 17th, 2007:

Whew!  What a weekend!  Friday afternoon we all found some, but not too many.  Whitey had a bag of maybe 40 small ones.  Chris found 16 and I found 7.  The group overall might have found 90-100.  The next day we went one place before the rains came.  Two groups of people found nearly all the morels, and they stayed near the road while the rest of us climbed the hills.  I didn't get a count, but one basket had perhaps 40 yellow morels, while another bag could have had 25.  Chris found 3 small white morels growing together and I found 1 yellow morel.  In all, no more than 80 were found.  Sunday we left Big Ridge and looked near Norris, where you and I went, and only found one really old black morel.  Chris and I went up on top and found a few yellow morels, all small, and enjoyed a wind chill of 35 degrees with sleet.  You disappoint me....  I told Chris there were only 5 people in the WORLD hunting morels Sunday, counting Whitey, you, and Earl.  I guess there were only 3!
Whitey wants to go this weekend and asked me to call him.  But the sturgeon in Wisconsin may begin spawning, and the FWS asked me to go with them again.  I will probably be driving to Chattanooga to meet them somewhere, probably with Anna George.
Cheers, now to read your other message...\
Ed

You do have True Morels there! These are choice edibles, you are lucky! Enjoy! -Chris M

April 17th, 2007: Hi Chris, My son and I found some very young Morels at ~ 2500 feet on Sat. The location has put out good numbers early in the season for the past 3 years. We looked it over well and found 5 smalls and decided to wait. "They are just popping" The weather has been, and is forecasted to be cool and moist with lows 31-36 and highs 50-60 with showers, should be a slow growth rate. Of coarse I could go in 5 and in 10 days and really learn what happens. Any thoughts ? Holehog. So many people think Morels pop up overnight, but, they actually grow slowly, and stay edible for up to three full weeks or more. Young Gray Morels 2 inches tall may grow into a giant yeallo Morel 10 inches tall over 3 weeks of time, especially if damp and cool weather is occurring. Only exception to this is if it were to warm up to 90 plus degrees for a few days in a row, this would speed their growth considerably. - Chris M

April 17th, 2007: Brian Francois, black morel - general location = Green Bay,  Wisconsin

April 18th, 2007: Chris Matherly and Jim Farmer led the group for the Kentucky Member Foray, and despite harsh weather conditions, and 5 nights in a row of freezing temps, snow flurries on Sunday, the group managed to find a total of 125 Morels!
