Here is a couple of photos from my find today. 8 total, only 2 big enough to pick. Left the rest for later. Should be big got 2 inches of rain tonight alone. These were odd, on the western edge of the woods on a northern facing small shallow depression running east to west. I think they were following the roots of an old dying cottonwood about 20 feet away. I found a few stragelers there yesterday leading back to that tree but missed this patch. Happy hunting.

April 13th, 2006: HelenMary, These were found on Weds., April 12, just north of Nashville, TN, in a low area around 50 feet from the road, right across from where I've been looking (unsuccessfully) for two years.  I immediately called my mushroom buddy who ran over and found as many if not more than I did.  The rain from this weekend must have brought them out.  A few were already a bit dry but plumped up nicely in salt water. We should get more rain this weekend so I'm planning on looking again.  ( I'd prefer the rain WITHOUT tornadoes this time...) Here are the ones I "caught".  And Yeah, these are the biggest ones I've ever found .

April 16th, 2006: Hi Chris, I like your website! My name is Daniel Häfliger. Yesterday (16th April 2006) me and my father found around 50 morels (morchella conica) in Switzerland (region Seeland). best regards, Daniel

Daniel, I have several contacts from Switzerland. I even have one Man's profile on my website, as he is a great photographer, and I have many of his photos on my site. The mushrooms you found are NOT Morchella, they are Verpa. If sliced open in half, all true Morels are hollow in side. What you have will have a white cottony substance inside the stem. Many people eat Verpas with no problems, but many do get stomach upsets, etc from consuming them. Do be careful, and I personally cannot recommend. Keep the Swiis photos coming though! Thanks, -Chris M For more info, photos: http://morelmushroomhunting.com/verpa_bohemica.htm

April 16th, 2006: I went back out to make sure we didn't miss any Morels on the Georgia Motherlode Foray last weekend, and couldn't believe my eyes. Two mega-giant Morels, tallest being 9 feet! April 16th, 2006: is this a false morel? it was found at a place called Folly Farm, its a nature reserve owned by the Avon Wildlife Trust and is in the Chew Valley, south of Bristol, UK.

Soil conditions were very moist due to the intense thunderstorms from the night before. Temperatures overnight were in the mid 50's and 60 degrees at dawn. Found 6 others that were dryed up beyond consumption leading me to believe they had popped well earlier in the week even though we had not had rain in a couple of weeks.
Additional Comments = I would like to add that the year before last I was hunting for morels in the Kansas City Northland area when I spotted a morel growing on top of a dead log! I did not know this was possible due to the fact that there wasn't any soil at the base where the mycelium was pretruding. Have you ever heard of or ran across this yourself? I have been hunting for 23 years and have never seen such an odd place for a morel! This usually only happens when a tree falls over and is uprooted. I have seen this a couple of times.- Chris M
