Once that area gets some rain and warmer temps it should be very good

April 30th, 2006: Outdorr, grey morel, M. Esculenta - general location = Eaton Rapids Michigan. Growing Conditions = Dead ripe Elm. Additional Comments = Pickin's are kinda slow in these-here parts, but can be found if you put in the time. Picked 40 grey's today. It's the trees that are hard to find. We should be peaking in 2 weeks. Rain & heat are needed. Am I about the only one picking here in southern Michigan? Come on people....let's pick up the pace!!!!!!! PS I see Jeff Mullins from Whitley Co. Indiana is hitting my old spots when I lived in Columbia City In. Glad to see the're not going to waste Chris!
April 30th, 2006: Will Hughes, landscape morel - general location = Eugene, Or. Growing Conditions = Red Fir landscape chip. I'm checking a burn next to sahalee falls next week. They say it was a winner last year. I hope it's not played-out already... Additional Comments = I know it's tempting to pluck the babies, as morels are so difficult to find, but if it's under two inches, let it ride 'till next time. You may come back to one as big as your hand, and you may give it a chance to drop more spores. Also, don't just yank them, as you will damage the mycelial mat, and perhaps inhibit fruiting for a second "pop". I cut them at the cap. The stems are tough, anyway.
April 30th, 2006: Found a few pounds of black morels in Door County Wisconsin, on April 26 - 29.

May 1st, 2006: Lisa, yellow morel - general location = I was walking in a South Minneapolis area, where I've found yellows in years past, and stopped to look. There were only 3 small ones, but I'm thinking that the soil temp is only just where it needs to be. Blondes were very tall and "leggy" and many were already starting to droop. Found 7 blacks beneath large poplars on April 30th. They were very small, difficult to see and had obviously just popped out. I suspect this will be the beginning of a great season for blacks, especially with a day or two of rain on its way.

May 1st, 2006: Terry Wilcox, grey morel - general location = I found them along an old railroad west of Victor, Iowa on about the 25 of April. Now we got moisture there should be more but if the sun comes out strong they will be gone in a couple days. Growing Conditions = They were under small dead Elm trees. It was somewhat dry there compared to past years. They were grays but some were almost black. The larger grays were 3 inches tall. Found about 8 nice yellow morals also. Additional Comments = I tries bunchs of ways of cooking them in past 40 years but this time a little different. I always soak 24 hours in salt water after a good cleaning to rid them of bugs. This time I cleaned them well but couldn't wait 24 hours to soak them. Old folks said they needed soaked, but why, I tossed some in a bread sack which had a cup of flour, a teaspoon of poultry seasing, a haft teaspoon garlic powder, a little salt and pepper. After a good coating of mix I fried them in a cast iron skillet with 1/2 inch veg. oil using moderate high heat. They were really good. The next night I fried the rest which had been saoked and they were not as good. Perhaps it was the earlier bunch still had a few bugs for favoring. Oh how often have you slit open a moral to find a slug inside. The mushroom had no holes in it so was the slug born and grew in the cavity.???? When I was a young lad I enjoyed hunting more than eating but anymore its the eating.

It was very warm and the morels were just starting, there may or may not be more in this area due to the nature of the terrain. Kind of rocky and very disturbed with huge piles churned and burned. been finding lots of long-stemmed morels with

I was so excited the very first place i went I only came up with some bones which could have beena former flood victim. Got Spooked. Went to another location, struck out again. Then I went to a place that was DNR and really didn't think they would let me hunt, but they did. THe DNR officer met me at he gate and wanted to know if I was going to join the event, so I asked her if I could hunt and her reply was that there coudln't be too many left cause there had beena lot of people on a hunt there already. So I didn't have high expectations at all and the very first step into the woods i found a half pounder. The reast were sparce and smaller. The season seems to be almost done in this region, which is surprisingly early; but it started very early and we've had no rain for 2 weeks.I'm actually surprised we found anything today

May 14th, 2006: Hello..I stumbled across your site by accident and although I only like to hunt and eat morels, I thought I'd send you this pix I took last night. I put a couple of yellows in there to show the color, etc., but the subject matter is the greys. I always thought greys were little ....maybe and inch or two high. However, as you can see, these greys are huge! Picked in southern Wisconsin. The pix doesn't make them look as grey as they really are, but they are definately not yellow. The pix was actually a little dark so I lightened it up one level in Photoshop. Other than that, however, the photo is unretouched. thank you. Carolyn

They do appear to be Fawn Mushrooms, the pinkish gills gives them away. They are edible, but a mediocre flavor, and best if button stage, not older specimens like in your photos. Polyporus squamosus is a good edible, but also must have a very fresh young specimen or it will be tough. -Chris M

One is almost completely intact. They were in a grassy area. My question is, where is it most common to find them. We own 110 acres of river front property and 40 acres of an old farm. The 110 acres is some hardwoods, some swamp, some thick jack pines with Ash, Aspen, other pines and spruce spread throughout and brushy throughout.
May 21st, 2006: Here are a few pics to go with Michie and Scott's morel find report. Thanks. Scott & Michie - general location = We found our morels in Kittitas County, WA. Growing Conditions = growing mostly under Ponderossa Pine. Additional Comments = We found 2.5 LBS, but it took many hours and a lot of hiking.

May 21st, 2006: David Hunsberger, black morel - general location = Ithaca New York. Growing Conditions = found 80 black morels- curiously at a long abandoned house sight in pine/ash woods. Many were literally growing out of rusted cans or broken bottles. Anyone else find a correlation between junkyards in the woods and morel finds? There may be a dead elm tree nearby.- Chris m

May 21st, 2006: Hi Chris, Found
these in Pierce County Washington at about
3800 feet. It has been real slow in Washington this year. These were
tricky to find, small and very fresh. It seems to me they are just
starting to flush at this elevation. It is about three weeks late in this
area from last
year. Daddy in Wa

May 22nd, 2006: I was wondering do you cut the mushrooms or pull them up. I want to do what is right. I found a few, and cut them off. Are they done now in this area? (Western WI) Thank You, Dorothy L. Ormson
Never pull them up. Think of the mushroom as the fruit like an apple. When you pick an apple, you don't break off a whole limb, just to get the apple. Same thing goes for the mushroom. The "plant" of the mushroom is hidden underground, and pulling them up will damage the plant. Plus, why would you want a bunch of dirt in your bag of mushrooms? Season should still be strong another week or so in your area.- Chris M
May 22nd, 2006: Hi Chris, I found these 23 big morels growing in one spot. They had 3 elms trees surrounded and were really tough to see in the knee high weeds. The two smallest were 4 & 4.5"s. The largest was 9.5"s and the rest were from 5"s to 8"s tall. I don't see morels this big very often here in SW Ohio. I did real well this year, conditions were just right. Steve. G.
May 22nd, 2006: I went yesterday to Howard Prarrie, Oregon and got about 5 pounds of morels, a pound of good angels wings, one nice pine bolete and a bag of corals. Even found a chanterelle that had been overtaken by a lobster and it even spread to a tree nearby. look in areas at the lakes where big timber and trees come together, look good because the duff and plants and weeds are growing good and the morels are the balcks covered in pine pollen and blend really good, some greys and light browns, no big blondes yet, but they should be up soon. Woofer
May 23rd, 2006: Shifty One, blacks and blondes - general location = Northeast Oregon, outside of Union. Growing Conditions = Under fir trees in needle mulch. Additional Comments = Still a little too wet or cold I think. We'll see what happens in the next couple of days.
May 23rd, 2006: Hey Chris, have a mushroom question for you. Are these mushrooms edible or poisonous? These are in my backyard every year and don't want my kids getting into them. I haven't been able to find them on any website. I live in Iowa & Illinois border. They are now starting to dry up some get up to 8" caps. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Todd

I am not sure, so will consult David Fischer. -Chris M
Thanks again for your help, Dave. -Chris M
May 23rd, 2006: Are these Morels?
Photos taken 5/20/06 Saugerties, NY . Near a
recently flooded river... not sure what the other was...
Brittany

Yes, you have Morels! The other mushroom is a Dryad's Saddle, a polyporus species, edible when young. Enjoy!- Chris M
Reply: Hi Chris, Thanks so much for
your help!
I've never gotten any mushrooms from the wild, although I'm certainly hoping to
again in the future now that I know what to look for! My
local public radio station features recipies on it's daily morning show, and a
morel mushroom sounded great but I had never heard of them. When I
saw the pictures on their website, I couldn't believe that the mushrooms
we bypassed on Saturday were such a delicacy! Anyways, I've attached a
picture from last night after sending my boyfriend out to retrieve them. Thanks
again for everything! Britt
May 23rd, 2006: morels mushroom, Kocurspencer
May 24th, 2006: Angela Pratt, yellow morel - general location = Amherst NH, Hillsboro. Growing Conditions = In dirt and rocks in middle of shopping strip about 5 feet from mulched beds. Additional Comments = There was one large and one small. They were fairly fresh, so I am thinking with all our rain and the coming heat for the weekend, I might well find a meal or two lying about New Hampshire. I have missed them SO as I grew up in Kansas. I found Chantrels here a couple of Septembers ago. Growing on top where they had covered stumps with fill. No more since that first big cluster of about 4 pounds. Also, had chicken mushrooms up a tree down the road that came to about 5 pounds. The neighbors think I'm NUTS !
May 24th, 2006: We found two large patches of wine-cap stropharia today , which is a good edible when still in the button stage. Very good stuffed or broiled. All were in wood chips in a Columbus park. We also saw a very large fruiting of some collybia, which I believe is either c. confluens, luxurians or polyphylla. If you have any ideas on the ID let me know --hugh

May 25th, 2006: Who says we don't have any Morels in NH!! (Or was that Morals?) Either way.... Location - Manchester NH - May 25th, 2006 Near the house in moist/shady/cool area near very old, (and dying) Hickory trees and bark mulched perennial gardens. These are the edible versions.....right? I'm dying to eat them, (but don't want to die because of eating them.) Justin Owen~

Justin, These may be the deadly variety. Maybe you should send them to me and let me try them just to be sure they are safe, the
